Yea you just need to find your affinity institution. You cannot apply with the application that is directly linked at UMB's site. You need to find the affinity institution, follow their crosslink to UMB, and then fill out the application with their affinity code in the URL. I know CA is a huge place so am not sure how easy it will be to find that one in a boatload.
Doc has a post about the UMB card and in the comments below there are links to several affinity cards. For California residents it'd be First National Bank of Staunton, even though it's an Illinois based bank.
Mine was 2500. Small but UMB supposedly doesn't give out huge SL with a few exceptions.
I was about to apply tonight, but decided to clarify at the last moment -- I have opened 5 credit cards in the past 24 months (but TU has 0 pulls). Since UMB is very conservative do you think this will be a barrier? I prepared myself last month, reduced the utilization to almost zero (it is 1 % right now), my credit scores were updated, I think now my credit rating is above 740. The only thing that stops is 5 credit lines in 2 years. I do not want to waste the HP, but I would gladly have got this card. Thank you!
A HP isn't going to kill you. It's a couple of points at most and a chance to get this card that you've spent so much time on already. I went for it even being geo-restricted because they let me apply. I got denied for not being in their service area or close enough to the branch they do have in the state. If the categories fit your spend then just pull the trigger and either you get approved or denied but, at least you know and can move onto the next target on your short list.
@Paranoid I think you have a good shot at it. As I mentioned upthread I was 4/24 at the time and I got approved so you'll probably be fine. Don't be discouraged about a potential wasted HP there is always the recon route and UMB from what I remember does recon.
I have applied and received a message: "Thank you for applying. Your application has been received and you will hear from us shortly. If you have questions, please contact our customer service center at 800.821.5184." Do not know is it a good sign or not..
Oh, yeah, everything is a manual review. Usually takes them a couple of days to get to the app. I forgot about that part of it.
