VS is Comenity...and for whatever reason, Comenity is notorious for asking people to call in to verify identity.
DW actually got offered the VS card during online checkout, accepted, and was then asked to call in to verify identity. She was approved with no hard pull on her credit, as are a great many people who call in for that reason. I'd call back and check the status of your application.
