Want to upgrade my cards

I recently discovered I qualify for credit cards after many, many years of denials. I had a C1 Platinum and a Credit Union Visa both with low limits. C1 surprised me with a CLI of 1500 on my 500 limit card. This prompted me to join CK and I found that I had good chances at a QS1 so I applied for and got it with a 2k limit. This is the first time this has ever happened since I was 16 and I am 44 now.

Unfortunately I did not continue my education before applying for other cards and ended up with a WalMart card, Amazon store card, Barclays Rewards Card, and a Texaco/Chevron card. Most are from Synchrony who seems to love me.

What I really want is a Freedom, AMEX, Citi Double rewards, and Discover IT cards. The problem is I have a lot of inquiries now (EXP: 19, EQF: 15, TU: 10) now and I think I might have run out of creditworthiness since all the cards were granted with steadily decreasing limits. I have a mortgage and an auto loan too and I am not married.

Amazon 1500

WalMart 800

Tex/Chev 400

Barclays 500

Cap1 Spark Classic 500

So my question is this, is my goal of these other cards doable or have I screwed up? I confess most of my credit knowledge is from CK and I am finding this to not necessarily be a good thing. But, I got here as fast as I could.

Freedom is likely a no go due to their 5 cards in 24 months rule since synch tends to report really fast

generally when you start getting denials or low SL it is time to stop apping and "garden" your cards for 6 month or so.

Got it. 6 months is not a problem. I can wait that out. I am not familiar with “gardening” but if it is what it sounds like I guess its nurturing the cards I have and growing them. I am reading as fast as I can but work keeps interrupting. Lol.

Check out the gardening thread in the Credit Card subforum for complete details but you have the basic idea (is also a great place for support if you get weak and feel the urge to app).

And I totally sympathize with work inferring, happens to me all the time lol

Re: Want to upgrade my cards

Honestly, I think you need to garden for a while. The cards you want are fairly high/elite level cards and you need to have higher scores than what you currently have and lower inquiries. That doesn't mean that you won't get those cards one day, but I would focus on letting all those inquiries slide off (generally two years from the date of each inquiry) and raising your scores. Because while you may want those cards, you should also want to get a good APR and healthy CL on them, too.

if you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask!

Re: Want to upgrade my cards

I think you are right and I think that is a good idea. I am reading the Gardening thread right now. I would rather get the cards with low APR and high CL than have to wait for the banks to grant them to me later.
