Wanting to get a new credit card

I've recently started building up a credit history. Capital One secured platinum with a $200 CL 7/6/2016 and a $500 platinum on 7/6/16. I also have a student loan from March.

I would love to eventually get a CSP or CSR but that is for next year when my credit ages a bit more as it is still so new.

I was thinking about getting a new card now to serve as a stepping stone to the higher end cards.

My scores are to CreditKarma are TU:633 EQ:640.

What card would you guys go for?

Re: Wanting to get a new credit card

Have you been paying on your student loan since March, or did you open it in march? (6 months of credit history yet?)

Amex and Discover like thin clean files and Amex's prequal is pretty solid if they recommend something.

You may need to wait a couple months before prequels start coming up though.

Re: Wanting to get a new credit card

Credit Karma scores are FAKO, you need to get your FICO scores so you will know where you really stand.  Try all the prequal sites, Discover, Amex, Chase, Citi, Cap1, but as always YMMV. Good luck

Current Scores EQ 689| EX 688| TU 679
Comenity 57.5k| Navy Fed 52.5k| Capital One 32.3k| Synchrony 23k| BBVA Compass 5.5k| First Commerce 4k| Barclays 1.9k|

Re: Wanting to get a new credit card

Use creditscorecard.com for a real, free, Experian FICO 08 score each month.

If it gives an error instead of a score, then you don't have enough history togenerate a real FICO score yet.

You should wait for your scores to rise into the 700's, at least.

You applied for two different Capital One cards, one secured and one unsecured, on the same day and were approved for both? Why did you do it that way? If you applied for the unsecured Capital One Platinum first and were approved, I would has skipped the secured card altogether.

I would wait until the 6th statement cuts on those cards (around 1/2017), then do two things:

  1. Contact Capital One and request a "product change" from Platinum to Quicksillver. If they let you, you'll have a nice 1.5% rewards card.
  2. Request a CLI for the card in #1.
  3. Apply for a 3rd card. I'd recommend the Discover it card. If you can get it. If approved, I'd cancel the Capital One secured card.

Good luck!
