I hope everyone's 2022 has gotten off to a great start! I wanted to share a weird denial response I received a few minutes ago when requesting a CLI for each of my 4 AMEX revolvers. A little bit of history, i've had a AMEX Hilton Honors and AMEX Everyday revolver since March 2018 both with a $1,000 starting limit. The other 2 revolvers were opened in March of 2019. All 4 of these AMEX revolvers were given a $1000 starting limit and have had a $0.00 balance since November 2021. I have never missed a payment...excellent payment history including numerous payoffs over the past 4 years since opening each card. Today was my 4th or 5th attempt at a CLI...and here is the weird denial response I received for each card (keep in mind that all 4 are revolvers)...
Reason(s) for Our Decision We reviewed several pieces of information when making this decision, including your history with us. We made this decision for the following reason(s): One or more of your American Express® Cards currently has a spending limit.
Well duhhhh....isn't there supposed to be a "spending limit" on revolvers? Anyone ever seen this before? At this point, since 2 of the 4 revolvers have an annual fee, i'm starting to think a relationship with AMEX is pointless.
If there is an Annual fees you might want to reconsider the card especially if it is not growing and meeting your needs. There are several other cards with better benefits. Good luck
It felt like forever that all my AMEX cards were stuck at $1000 SL. I opened and closed around 5-8 cards with them from 2012 all were stuck at that SL.
In 2018 they approved me for a $2k card that was quickly reduced to $1200 after they noticed my maxed out cards (it was when I started racking up debt).
Fast forward to 2021, my debt was mostly paid off and they approved me for two $10k cards.
So who knows with AMEX.
Did you use the direct link to apply for CLI or did you use the button?

Ha ha!! That's a good one!! Just when I thought I'd seen it all, something like this comes along.
You're absolutely sure none of your Amex cards is a charge card, right? Keeping in mind that denial reasons can range from ridiculous to accurate, it's possible this is just an example of ridiculous. Or...is it possible that one of your cards had its limit decreased? MAYBE that's what it means. Or not. I don't know!
You might want to call and see if an actual person can shed any light on this. I do hope you'll update us if you find out anything.
$1000 limits mean you were barely approved. That alone will keep you from getting a CLI anytime in the near future. People have gone 5+ years without one. Even after getting a card with a higher limit, the 1k one won't grow.
In addition to that, amex cards have flexible limits allowing you to go over at their discretion. I'm willing to bet at least one of your cards had a hard limit put in place so that can't happen. That hard limit won't allow you to get any CLIs or new cards (outside of up and downgrades) until it's removed. Unfortunately, there's no way to speed up the removal. They'll remove it whenever they feel you're no longer a risk. That could take many years.
ETA: isn't that a rose gold charge card in your signature?
I see 4 amex in your sig, 1 charge card and 3 credit cards.
As I understand your post, you have a spending limit on 4 cards..
If the gold (charge) card has a spending limit, that is a limitation which they are referring to I would guess.
If you tried to increase your limit on the gold card -- well normally there isn't a preset spending limit on a gold card and I do not think the normal CLI request link would do anything other than fail.
If you tried to get an increase on an amex credit card then it may be referring to the spend limit imposed on the gold card -- the way the decline message is stated it sounds relevant to a charge card and not a credit card.
