OP, You've been given very good advice so far. I'll add one more thing. If approved, most likely an extremely low limit. However, a foot in the door.

i had this q when i was apping for amex. came to this board for answers and they suggd the same. my score was in their "not good" range low 650s. i got approved for 1k. i had a lot of delinquencies from student loans when i apped. also, i don't believe that their prequal found a prequal offer for me, so i just applied.
DW was preapproved for a Gold at 630 F08. I got a Biz Gold at 640 or so. Her approval was 6 months ago, no additional prequals as yet. She started with a 20K pay over time limit and it is still at that point. She just reached 675 for her EX F08 score but no other prequals so far.

Has your DW gone to any of the Amex cards while signed in and clicked the apply button? It will automatically tell you if you're preapproved for that particular card. I didn't know I had to click APPLY to see it until I read it somewhere here. Plus it's a SP approval since she's already in with Amex (same for you).

i read this on this site, but i've never been able to get a rep to confirm it via chat, so haven't applied for a 2nd card. they all say that they can't guarantee that it'll be a soft pull. one of the reps told me that it's up to the bureaus whether or not it's a soft/hard pull and it's not up to amex.
There's always a chance it's a HP but by and large with a couple months' history, most end up with a SP for further cards.

That's assuming that the 650 is an Experian FICO 8 score (available free at creditscorecard.com courtesy of Discover), of course, as that is the one that Amex uses. Amex also takes many other factors into consideration when it comes to underwriting - scores are not everything with them, but generally speaking those with 720 and higher scores with clean records will fare better.
Umm. Yeah. Amex isn't approving any Gold or Platinums at 650 EX FICO 8.
Don't risk the hard pull.

I got a gold charge and a Delta Platinum with a 627. I did have over a year of experience with them though. 😬

The "apply" button trick for "X, you are preapproved" or "expanding your membership is easy" is just a myth. It's not at all a garuntee on approval. So just apply when your stats are right.

Sure. But your situation is different from OP. So let's give them the advise that applies to them.
