So my credit limit on the Discover card is $1,250. Is that good for a first card?

I don't physically have either yet. I just found out that I was approved for both. Trying to decide if I should even bother accepting the secure cap one card since I got approved for the unsecured discover.

Yeah - I would say that is a pretty decent SL for someone with no credit history.

Take your time - use your discover card - pay it off - after the 3rd statement you can ask for CLI

Ideally you need 3 lines....but no one says you have to have them all in the same week.   Wait for your first statement to cut and for discover to report to the CRAs.   Then apply for your next card.

I'd take the CapOne card if you can do the deposit - after 6 mos or so of the two cards reporting you'll have a much easier time getting approved for something else unsecured.

Also - check into the Credit union secured loan/cards - you can get 2 items reporting for a limited investment......

A secured card doesn't negatively impact your credit. We've had one for the past 3 years and it's helped tremendously.

Make sure you understand the factors that DO matter though.
We started out with a $1000 limit on our secured card, and semi-regularly charged $500+ on it for a given statement. That was considered over 50% utilization, which is bad. You want to keep your utilization under 30% even if you PIF every month. I think if you pay it down before the statement posts, it won't make it to your credit score, but I'm not 100% sure.
