What is the best way to APP an AMEX. Somewhere in my future I'm going to APP them and see differences of opinions on here. Is it best to shoot for "a better one" and then if denied let them counter with a more introductory card, or go for one that is known to be easier when on the border?

Amex won't counter with card. You pick, apply, and either approved or denied.

Let them counter? Idont thinkthats even possible ifIm understanding this correctly. Personally I went for the card I wanted. Either they would approve or deny but Iwasnt interested in applying for whats generally considered an easier card to get "in withAmex". Its up to you
I have seen some posts where they did not get what they wanted, then received an email offering another. I hear AMEX green is easier, but I also hear people screaming run away from the green!

Green might be easier but if its not a card you actually want then dont waste time applying for it. I doubt the email offer was more than marketing. Each application would be a new HP. Never heard of Amex countering with a different card
This. Don't app for a card you wouldn't use.
AFAIK, all the charge cards (Green, Gold, PRG, Plat) all have the same UW requirements. So Green isn't any easier than the others.
If you're gonna app for an AMEX charge, I'd get the PRG when you get a 50k MR offer. If you don't like it, drop it before the AF hits. Other than that, the Everyday and Blue Cash Everyday are popular cards to apply for and keep from Amex.

thats somewhat true i was denied for both green and gold and i recon and was approved for both

Recon isnt the same as counter. Counter implies you apping for maybe an Everyday card and Amex coming to you saying they would approve Green instead. That doesnt happen
Exactly right. AMEX doesn't counter but some people have had success on recon though it's not as common as with other cc companies.
Its generally considered that the charge cards are easier to be approved for than the revolvers. Additionally there is no difference between the 3 colors of charge cards. Same U/w requirements.
Like me any credit card please apply for a card that fits your needs not just to say 'woohoo I have a card from XYZ company'. We often talk about these cards as if it was some game to be won by being approved for any and every card. Too often this leads to financial disaster if you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
I'm not really understand the question too well. First of all, they're not going to not approve for you for x, and then counter with y. It doesn't work that way. Even recon is simply recon for whatever you applied for. The most that some issuers (not really Amex) may do as far as "switching the product" would be to offer you a secured version if you can't get approved otherwise (i.e. BOA, Discover do this), but it's still the same product otherwise.
Apply for what you actually want, not what's popular or what you may get approved for. I could likely get approved for an Amex Green, for example, but I have no use for it and am not interested in a charge card, so why would I do it? There's no point. Credit cards aren't a game, and each account you go for does remain on your report for ten years, so IMO, it's better to choose wisely based on what you actually want.
