When should I apply for Amex Platinum?

Hello all.

I recently got my first Amex card (BCE) and they gave me a 20k starting limit which was surprising. I'll be starting a new job in the next week which will be about 4x my current salary (close to 6 figures). Due to new circumstances I think I would benefit from a platinum card. I'm at experian 708 (took 3 points hit from the inquiry for the BCE), and the BCE account hasn't actually shown on my report yet (probably will after the statement closes). Should I wait until that new account shows up, or will the point difference be negligible? With close to 6 figure salary and the only thing negatively affecting my report being average age of 2.5 years matter? Absolutely no bads on my report.

I'm not sure my odds of approval or which score they would even use. If I wait, is there a way to tell when Amex does the soft pull every month for existing card members? It seems im being targeted for an offer better than the standard one. 75-85k points is what im getting by searching google. I figured they liked my file assuming the huge SL on the BCE card.

Thank you

You might Check The Pre-Qualify page when you log into to American Express, or Give Amex Application's a Call?

Re: When should I apply for Amex Platinum?

Update: Declined and the only reason is "credit card balances too high." I have had 0% util for 2.5-3 months and I have no idea how this is possible. I even pulled the archived report they used from a few weeks ago, there's no utilization at all. Any advice?

Re: When should I apply for Amex Platinum?

Just keep going, build a little more time with Amex, and check your prequals - go to “view all cards” and click “apply now” for the Plat. When you see “swing_shot, you are preapproved!” you’ll know you’re good to go.

Your BCE will likely report after the second statement but that’s irrelevant to Amex since they obviously know your activity. Just use and pay your BCE and the prequals will come.

Replace that with your real name in the message. That's the message you're looking for to get a pre-approval which is as close to a sure thing as you can get.
