When you request a CLI, do you shoot for a high number and see if they will counter or go for an amount that will likely be approved? I know with Cap1, they will ask how much I'm looking for and if I will accept a lower amount if that can't be approved. I always stay conservative and have always been approved for the amount that I request. I think I'm going to step up my requests a little.
My thought was the same as yours before the forum...better to aim high as it seems most lenders will counter.

With Synchrony, I always aim high and ask for $10k tops each time. When I still had my lowes card, I aimed really high and got what I wanted.
I've done the same with a few other lenders before, including Amex.

I think it depends on the lender that you are gonna request CLI as they have different policies regarding CLI, as we can see Amex only allows 3X CLI max. Synchrony/lowes seems to be more lax IMO.
@Popa: I swear that I saw your total credit line as 80,000 like 5 minutes ago. Did you just get CL or my eyesight just got really bad???
I generally aim for what I think I can get, and I always get the amount I ask for. So I'm thinking about asking for ridiculous amount just to get the max possible.

I've built it up gradually and didn't just get it out of nowhere. Getting some CLIs on Amazon, Paypal, and CapOne really helped too. Trial and error experience and it can be done.
And look at my TJ Maxx MC thread and I got $1800 more.
If I hadn't closed Lowes, I'd be at $98,000 of credit right now since I got that limit up to $17k, not that my credit profile and portfolio right now isn't doing bad or anything. I'm still really mixed about the closure because I probably wouldn't have closed it had I not been for the stupid Citi drama. They were not worth my time at all and they were the only lender that gave me that kind of crap to deal with. Even Barclays has been easier for me to work with.
I also know now what might have really triggered it. I'm even shocked myself how I've gotten to this point where I'd even have more credit than I'll ever need but there's also that thrill of seeing how far I can keep going.
How about the times that you shot high and were denied, do they counter with a lower amount?

Usually they counter with a lower limit. same with my first Amex CLI.
I've never actually asked for a CLI--so far all the limits I've had have been adequate for what I needed at the time, plus I got auto CLIs over time for all but the Capital One cards and the BofA card.
