Short and sweet, and I'm not referring to right now, but months down the road when my inquiries age a little bit I'd like to apply for a new credit card to keep building my history.
The cards, limits and age of the cards I currently have are as follows:
Capital One Quicksilver (OG Secured Platinum) - $600 - 1Y8M
Discover It Cash Back - $1000 - 8MO
US Bank Cash+ - $1000 - 8MO
Target Credit Card - $500 - 8MO
TU score when I pay off credit card debt is 697, Equifax is 685 and Experian is 674.
Cap1 is a QS Unsecured, but they refuse to increase my limit... I've been requesting for a year now.
I do have two baddies on my report, a $744 apartment collection from 4.5 years ago and a $300 medical bill from 5 years ago. I have 3 paid off auto loans, 4 open ones - all with good payment history. Haven't missed a payment in 2 years (when my credit journey began)
I'm kind of in the same situation with my QS. I keep it in my wallet because it looks good and in the off chance they don't take my Discover card I still like to take advantage of the 1.5% back, but I'm leaning towards throwing it in my safe and never using it.
Neither collection accounts are paid. I don't even know what the $300 medical bill is tbh and they'll both off soon enough at this point.
APRs are good on three of them, the other I cosigned for my sister on and that's at a 12.19 because of her score. What amazes me is with my auto history banks will allow me FOUR open auto loans, but Chase Bank won't approve me for a little $1500 credit card? COME ON NOW.
They can take the cars back but they don't want your groceries.
My personal, subjective advice would be to close the Cap One QS. I know it’s your oldest, but not by much. It’s bucketed and most likely will never grow. Keep an eye on Amex prequals in the near future. Amex cards grow fast. Congrats on that USB Cash + and the Disco. Both of those are great cards!
I'll probably end up closing it as soon as I'm approved for a prime Cap1 card with a decent credit line, but for now it's just going in my safe since it's pretty much useless to me.
I love the Cash+ and Discover It cards. Excellent cash back program and two cards I really wanted to have.
You don't want a $1500 Chase card. They don't grow very well. Try to wait until your scores are better.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Realistically I'll probably wait until I'm in the 700s or 710 at minimum to apply for a Chase/AMEX card. I want a decent limit when I decide to go that route. Once my utilization is below 10% on my report (it's at about 30% right now because I paid a day later than when my Discover reported) my score jumps up to 700s on TU/EQ and 690ish on Experian. I'll probably end up waiting 6 more months before I apply for anything again. I fear I'm taking on new credit way too quickly that banks get a little weary on giving me more, regardless of my payment history. I keep getting preapproved letters for subprime bank credit cards with like $1500 limits, but I'm not going down that road again...
