So.... I have been using my Discover IT card for >4years. I have been stuck with my initial credit line of $2000. I have never received an automatic CLI. I usually spend ~$300 monthly and pay it off immediately. My credit scores across 3 bureaus are around 770-780. I tried to request a CLI but it required a HP. My Citi and Chase credits cards all have CL of >10k each. I read all the stories of other people receiving huge CLIs from Discover. I don't understand why Discover won't increase my credit limit without a hard pull. Any thoughts?

If it helps:

I got my Discover in Apr 2013, and the CL was $750. I used it a lot, but in Nov 2013, when I wanted a CLI, the system said no go without an HP. I cancelled the request and called the CSR, who said they can't override the system, but she agreed to let me talk to a credit analyst. It didn't take away the HP, but I agreed, and got an increase to $2k. I needed that card to grow because I had some holiday shopping to be done. Back then, I didn't know about this website and didn't know the tricks of the trade Smiley Happy

Since then, I've got one auto CLI, and several SP CLIs, and did not require any further HPs. The current line is at $34k.

I think an HP sometimes gets you that initial boost, for some profiles where SP doesn't work. Since you haven't got any CLIs at all, I'd venture and get the first one using HP. Ask for as high as you could think and let them counter.

Is it a good idea to message them asking why they won't give me an automatic CLI or a SP CLI?

I have 776 for TU. Only thing that stands out in my reports is $9k deferred student loan. No late payments or anything. I never come close to 10% total credit usage.

Thin file / lack of depth? Score is nice, but there are other factors.

I have several cards and old card is around 6 years.

They also want a HP from me for a CLI. I don't know why some people always get SP, and some of us require a HP. Mine could be because when I originally app'd, I app'd as a student (I was denied and then offered the secured version) but I don't recall being asked any employment info on the app because I had selected "student"... so my thinking is maybe that's why once mine graduated they wouldn't increase my limit without a HP... I don't know, it's just a thought.

This is an interesting point. To the OP: Do you have the income and housing cost info filled out in the profile section?

You can ask, but if your profile overall is solid, they will most likely respond with some general canned answer saying your profile looks great and tell you to try again in 4-6 months.

Discover is another lender that doesn't make sense. I made $5,000 in payments on the card last month, and have been using it for a minimum of $1,400 spend each month for the past 5 months. I pay the $1,400 spent on it monthly in full every month. They won't do a CLI without a HP for me either.

Currently carrying a $1,200 balance transfer on a 0% for 18 months promotion. I see more people getting SP CLI's with Discover when they are not carrying balance transfers, but what good is the 0% offer if you never use it?

I wish they empowered their analysts to make a CLI decision other than the canned response the system pulls out. Analyst empowerment seems to be absent at Discover.

Going to move my spend to lenders that reward me relative to my loyalty. Smiley Happy

Definitely agree with Ghoshida. Before i got to this message, i was thinking of posting the same thing. Bite the bullet and take the HP. Do it at the right time when uti is at its lowest. Let them get a fresh copy of your credit report. Since you have never had a cli, they may want to do the first one with HP, simply because the system may say " SP only if there is HP copy of the credit report on file within the last 24 months" or something to that nature. I am sure you will get auto cli's and sp cli's after your first HP CLI. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Re: Why won't Discover increase my CL without a HP?

It is helpful to remember this post that I've seen in several threads which the refelects the experience of a number of people on the board here:

1) Use Discover like crazy for many months

2) Make large payments or PIF

3) Try for SP but no SP available

4) Agree to take HP

6) Discover grants $500 after HP (somewhat common)

6) Sock drawer the card permanently
