Working on my scores

New here! Hi!!

I had a 700+ score and (too) many cards before the recession and a layoff in '08. By 2012 I couldn't afford to care what my scores were as I had 2 judgments from cc's, medical bills in collections, etc.

Last fall I got a pre-approval for Merrick. I was surprised to be approved for $700. My utilization is a little high right now but I'll be paying that down. I just recently got a pre-approval for the Capital One Buy Power Card (haven't applied for that one).

I have $4300 owed in 2 judgments and about $3000 in medical bills (none in collections yet) about like $2000 on a few other old accounts. I was planning to file bankruptcy this year, but I am thinking I can dig myself out of this in a couple years (especially hoping I can settle a couple of the really old ones).

My Merrick card comes with monthly scoring and it says it's 610.

I just got approved for a new (cheaper!) apartment so I went to apply for an Ashley Furniture card and was denied, told my score was 617.

I hope to learn a lot around here!

Re: Working on my scores

OMG After searching the boards I applied for and was approved for both a Cap One Platinum and QuickSilver. Both are only $300 balances but still.

WOW! I'm so excited!

I'm on month 4 of Merrick so hopefully I'll see that CLI in a few months.

One year later and I've gone from a 610 TU to 680. And climbing! I have 4 nearly maxed out cards that haven't updated yet.  I've also gone from $700 in available credit to over $30,000.

Re: Working on my scores

Indeed, nice job MrsCHX!. Becareful having 4 almost maxed out cards. Could lead you back to trouble ally. One thing im totally conscious of is remembering what led to my bk, maxed out accounts that i could never being down paying minimums so if you are rebuikding like me try not to buy more than you can reasonably pay back within a few months , or less Smiley Happy

By the way this thread threw me for a loopdy doo LOL, i saw Feb 11, was like oh snap!, then i saw your name and saying you were new and i was like, i know ive seen your name a couple times haha. Glad its just an updateSmiley Happy Best credit , and life , wishesSmiley Happy

Re: Working on my scores

mrsCHS,

Reading your story inspired me to post my first post. I am in the same situation as you in my rebuilding process. I was just wondering if you did anything with your judgements? Reason I ask is I have a judgement from 2011 that is unpaid. I could pay it but some have said that could possibly reset the clock. I want to do the right thing but I get conflicting opinions.

Thank you, Doug

Re: Working on my scores

AJC they *were* maxed. They are paid off completely but not yet updated on any of the bureaus. By month end my TU should definitely hit 700.

Killintime I did not pay them. One hadn't bothered to try to collect at all ever. The other, Portfolio Recovery levied my bank account twice but I was exempt from garnishment both times. As of October they were still SP my reports twice a month. I plan to have to pay that $2400 at some point. My state allows them to renew before 10 years, which isn't until 2020.
