It's not likely that Amex will approve her.  Even though the accounts she had were included in the BK, most creditors won't approve you again until you've repaid them.  How long she will have to wait is unknown and the only way she will ever know is to apply and she what happens.  Creditors like Amex and Chase are known to hold grudges and maintain a 'blacklist' for a very long time.

Amex has a very, very, very, very long memory if they were iib.  If she wants to apply that badly and has an EX inquiry to burn, let her go ahead and do it.  Worse case, she gets a denial letter that basically says you burned us, we remember.  Best case, she gets her shiny new card and is an exception to what we have seen around here.

Re: amex iib

I just got approved for the Amex Platinum Charge last week, 10 years after including Amex in my bankruptcy (filed May 2006 and recently off all 3 reports.) I was expecting an instant denial but somehow I'm off the blacklist. I even have 2 baddies on my report - one collection account related to a small business debt that I PGed, and some lates on a federal student loan. Probably helps that I have a high income and no inquiries in the last 2 years other than a few from shopping around for a car loan in 2015.

I am still floored that I have this card in hand. The Platinum is my dream card as I fly frequently on Delta... The airline fee credit and lounge access make the $450 AF well worth it to me.

Lessons learned: if your BK has fallen off your report after 10 years, it's worth a try getting back in with Amex even if you burned them before.

If you got an EX inq to burn, you could try it. One of three things will happen:

1. It automatically gives you a "past relationship" response after applying, and you won't get the HP.
2. You'll get the HP, and get denied for BK present
3. you'll get approved, and a HP.

Theres no crystal ball here, and some people get in sooner, some later, some not at all or like 20 yrs later, when Amex feels enough time has passed on their end to get over the hurt you caused them.

If you want to try, Id say apply for the Delta Gold. Its the easiest to get with a tarnished report. If approved, 9/10 Sl will be $1k..Good luck!

+10000 ........ Didn't file on them but had a charge off during my college years (green charge card) and it took me 20 years ... I appd for the Delta card (I am a Delta loyalist)....Like Pizza and others have said,  some get in sooner , others have to wait and wait and wait....

Discover I.T. (11k) - U.S. Bank Platinum (9k) - NASA (30k) - Venture (22K) - AMEX Delta Skymiles Gold (6k) -AMEX PRG (AU) plus a few CU CC's and Store Cards = 130k (roughly)

Re: amex iib

I think things have certainly changed with AmEx. People have gotten in in 10 years. As for burning EX inquiry, there is no need to worry about it, if AmEx denies you there is no HP just SP.

Tell your wife to go ahead and try it. She may get lucky!!
