Just got a mortgage, and since I don't have any other big credit goals coming up I decided to get some new credit despite an aaoa of only 3 years. Going in scores were EQ 724, TU 711, and EX 703. Because of moving expenses and home purchases, reporting util was much higher than I normally keep it, at about 48% on about $8K available credit.
I applied for a Discover for 0% and got approved for $12.5K--thrilled that I could consolidate and pay off all the moving spending at 0% interest. I've also been dying for an AmEx and got brazen--applied and got an instant $10K approval. Fast forward to last night, doing regular Amazon shopping, I didn't think it through and bit at the Chase Rewards $30 gift card offer. Approved, but for an abysmal $500. I have another Chase account (Freedom) but didn't think things through before hitting "Apply"--most of my current debt sits on that Freedom and my new Discover balance transfer won't go through until sometime next cycle.
Feeling like an impulsive jerk, and one with a crazy scary aaoa and a bunch of fresh inquiries. All for a $30 gift card and a $500 CL. Grrrrrrr! ![]()
I told my cousin Chase pre-approvals were golden. He applied for the Freedom and only got $500. I laughed so hard but did feel some shame. Then after a few short months they bumped him up to $2,000. It's not about your mistake. It's about how you handle your mistake and recover from it. Grow some corn for 6 months to a year.
The Amazon card is known for crappy limits, so don't be too hard on yourself. Just seems to be part of the underwriting to get a bad limit and APR in most cases (not that it's designed for carrying a balance).
Chalk it up to an impulse app and move on. It's not the end of the world. We've all apped for things we later wish we had not.
Yeah....don't fret over the paltry $500, revel in the new $12.5k & $10k cards!
I believe congrats are in order!! :0)
you'll save way over $30 with your new balance transfer, and the discover deals and rewards will be way better than $30 bucks too
Thank you all. Yeah, the approvals had me riding high until the $500 reality slap. Thanks for the positive thoughts. Definitely in the garden for the foreseeable future.
