"Getting in with amex"

I was wondering does it really make a difference if you get a charge card to get in with amex? Like does it make a difference if you show them specifically as a lender that you can handle a charge so they all give you a revolver? Or why not just straight for the revolver?

Re: "Getting in with amex"

If you can get a CSP you can get an Amex revolver.

Charge card if desperate in your situation to set MSD but frankly you've got 10 months before needing to worry about that so apply for the card you want.

Charge card undoubtedly helped me but my FICO's were ~630ish at the time, 640 Beacon 5 by the time I applied for the revolver.  Good chance my FICO 8 scores were higher but I didn't have access to any of them at that point.

Re: "Getting in with amex"

Thanks for the confidence boost :I however I was declined for a revolver and agree with the reasons. So I'm working on everything. Planning on a apping again once mortgage is secured. But was wondering about charge cards like if it honestly made a difference to get in. Because Then I would consider one if denied for revolver again.

Re: "Getting in with amex"

I thought about recon but didn't want to use another inq. Honestly I knew I would be declined. But it was more of an impulse app like just maybe I would be approved. Not upset by it But denial reasons were low score due to according to them:

High util
Too many new accounts
Too many inqs
Accounts too new

Re: "Getting in with amex"

For future reference, recon is simply that. Reconsideration of the initial hard inquiry they just pulled.  So there's no reason you would have received another inquiry.

How long ago did you apply for this?

Re: "Getting in with amex"

Well i asked 2 reps about that and they did say another HP would be done. Because I was confused about that also. They said another pull would be done and a manual review would be done and decision would be made if I chose to reconsider.

As for when I applied. Its been too long to recon now. But I think it was November?

Re: "Getting in with amex"

Recon may involve an additional hp. In the case where the CR was erroneous they may pull to verify the update or if they pull from a different bureau in an attempt to approve a borderline application.

Bottomline is a reconsideration may involve an inquiry.

Re: "Getting in with amex"

To answer OP's question, yes, a revolver (when used correctly) will help your internal score with AMEX, thus helping you get revolvers down the road. call the EO. they're super nice and very helpful when reconning.

Re: "Getting in with amex"

I'd only go for the charge card if there's a really good sign up offer like on the PRG.

Otherwise, just go for the revolver you want and build some history off that and you'll find it so much easier to get other Amex cards if you give it time. Just two months after I got my Delta gold, I was able to get the Everyday card and a few months after that the BCE and last month the PRG and Hilton HHonors cards.
