when to apply for reward cards....

2 and 1/2 years since ch 7 discharge, current scoring is 670-710 between the three agencies. at what point do i have an excellent chance of obtaining reward (airline, hotel) cards? any specific cards are easier? thanks.

I think a lot depends upon whether any of the underlying financial institutions supporting the cards you have in mind got burned in your Chapter 7.  If, for instance, you want a Delta Skymiles card and you burned AMEX in your bankruptcy, the prevailing wisdom is, don't even bother applying.  On the other hand, your scores look good enough for you to apply for a rewards card supported by any financial institution you didn't burn.

Keep us posted.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

OP, what's your typical spending look like? Or do you have a goal in mind to earn toward, such as miles/points for a trip? Knowing this will help determine what lenders offer cards best suited to your needs, and in turn your odds of approval.

For AMEX, the general rule is you are basically blackballed for 5 years and 1 month after a bankruptcy filing.

Re: when to apply for reward cards....

Yes, they will not approve a card until your BK filing date is 61 months gone, regardless if you IIB'ed them or not. If you burned them or otherwise caused them to take a loss, it's YMMV when you'll get back in. If you're blacklisted, they won't even HP you, you'll get an instant auto-decline.

Re: when to apply for reward cards....

ok so i'll avoid Amex for a couple of years. are there any non-Amex travel reward cards with a good chance of approval or is this not the correct forum? thanks.
