Amex CLI and question!

Well today was day 61 and therefore I went to request my 3x increase. I have a limited file, so I was certain I would be denied due to adding 2 new tradelines after my amex approval. To my surprise though they countered $5,400 when I requested $9,000. So I am pretty happy that I was able to nearly double my limit! This is also my first card over 5k so I feel like I have reached a credit milestone!

Question: I think I read on here a couple weeks ago that amex will only extend 40% of your income per card. Right now my 5,400 limit is exactly 40% of my income. Does anybody know if this is true? If it is I guess I won’t have to request another one anytime soon.

Re: Amex CLI and question!

Congrats

Not true to your question each person is different for what they'll extend for a limit

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

I was one of the Forum members who has seen this 40% Amex CL cutoff.  Just a couple of weeks ago I requested my Amex BCE card CL be increased from $24K (exactly 40% of my $60K reported salary) to $28K.  Just a few days ago I received a letter from Amex with the following reason why my CLI was DENIED:

"Your overall debt with other creditors listed in your credit bureau report and the credit limits on your American Express Cards is high in relation to your reported income."

Now, my overall debt listed on my last few credit reports was LESS than $60 total, meaning their decision was based primarily on my reported income!  So, in MY case this 40% threshold seems to be applicable.  OTHERS have reported seeing the same 40% limit for their accounts.  And, it now appears, so did you.  Is this trend applicable for ALL Amex members?  I certainly can not answer that question.  If anything, this correlation between income and ultimate CL, although it seems linear towards the lower end of the income scale, perhaps does not hold at the higher incomes?  Speculation, of course, and without enough data to prove anything.  Still, I find this 40% limit to be very useful as a potential guideline for newcomers making their first forays into the Amex World of CLI's!
