Amex CLI - asking for too much?

Hi everyone,

I have an Amex BCE (PCd from BCP before the end of 1st year). I started with a credit limit of $4,300. At 61 days, I got a CLI approved for $12,900. After 180 days, I requested and was approved for another CLI to $24,000. I didn't want to ask for more because from the Amex sticky thread here, it says that Amex might ask for 4506T if asking for a CLI of >$25,000. Today, I am completing 180 days since my last CLI. Should I ask for a CLI? If yes, how much? I'm thinking to ask for $40,000, but, I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Need your inputs. Thanks.

What's your concern over a 4506-T?

Privacy concerns? Your income has risen and isn't totally reflected on your most recent return? You exaggerated your income? You have an income source not reflected on your return?

Or you're worried about AA just for having a very high limit?

Re: Amex CLI - asking for too much?

why do you need 40K on a limited reward card? I would keep the current line, REDUCE it before future Amex applications . Amex cli is so easy to get, why push the envelope unnecessarily.

I am at 35k with no 4506-t. Go for it. If they request a 4506-t you can just ignore it and not get your cl.

I was in a very simialr situation.  I got the 61 day CLI and then the 181 day CLI brining me to 28K.  On January 27 (another 181 days), I asked for 50k and they counter with 41K immediatly.  I took it.

No concerns, worried about having AA for very high limit. I use the card for maybe a couple of hundred bucks a month and if they have any good rewards.

There's no other Amex card which appeals to me ATM, so I don't think I'll get one in the near future. I want to increase my overall credit line. My other cards have low limits (Barclays Arrival - $7,500 and CapOne QS - $5,000). Maybe getting higher limit here might help with CLIs on those cards?

Excellent! What was your previous limit on the card?

Another question, just for confirmation - do they do a hard pull for higher CLIs, or is it still a soft pull?

Re: Amex CLI - asking for too much?

If you want to ask for $40k, you can. You won't know how AMEX reacts until you do ask, and a 4506T in this case is not Adverse Action, it's just income verification.

Re: Amex CLI - asking for too much?

Above $25k, you are playing in the area where 4506T request become more

likely. If you want the CLI, the surest, easiet way is just provide the form if asked.

It's painlees.

Just my seat of the pants guess, Your chances of a CLI without a 4506T request:

$30K - good chance

$35K - maybe

$40K - unlikely

As a data point, a couple years ago, I was requested a 4506T for a $25K>$40 CLI

on my BCP that was a 20 year perfect account, 830 FICO, and $180K reported income.

I've seen others report getting to $40K without the request, so it isn't certain what

AMEX keys on or if there is even a Random element built in. I provided the form, got

the CLI, and got another to $50k about 9 months later with no further request. No HP,

my reports are always frozen.

You can get a little idea about how AMEX feels about your credit limit by playing with

the "Check Spending Ability" button a time or two. I'd wait a few days after pressing

it to put in a CLI, but that's only a guess.

+ 850 FICO8 since 2015, Thanks MyFICO - 5+ years since last HP
