Re: Amex Platinum Approved w/ Pre-Approval

Appreciate the great advice all, excellent help as always.  So, that leads me to want to confirm something...  Being I was signed in, and the pre-approval was a SP,  am I correct then in saying that once the Platinum was approved it will indeed show a HP in another month or two

If that is the case and it's not just staying a SP, then yes... I do need to determine what revolver to add as I already have the EDC card.  Being the Platinum gives you mid tier status in both Hilton and Marriott, it's a tough call for which hotel card would be needed... although as @AllThingsInTime stated, the SPG has a waived fee and I believe 75,000 additional SUB over the Hilton card right now with a waived fee (Although you can only get 1 card bonus if I read correctly on other threads so that point is mute.)  Decisions.  That would mean that if it takes Amex 2 months to most likely report the HP, I would want to App for the CSR in September to be sure I'm below the 5/24 and then plant myself in the garden for 2 years of growing.

If you do opt for the CSR, wait until your utilization drops to 7% for optimal SL. The Amex will likely take 2 months to report so you could go for another Amex revolver, if you wanted (likely a SP) without necessarily hurting your Chase chances (during the time it takes to report). But when they do, you’ll be 5/24 or 6/24 (depending on whether you counted the Platinum), so make it count.

Definitely planning this one out at the moment, as I hadn't considered that the initial SP for the Platinum (And as a current Amex holder) would result in a HP thus bumping to the 3/24 up to 4/24 already, and if I opt for a Revolver addition since there probably is that HP for the platinum, then yes, within 2 months I can see that'd be 5/24.

If you're a current American Express member and you attempt to view pre-approvals without logging in to your account; you will be unable to view any pre-approvals and the website will prompt you to log in to your account.

@For most existing Amex members, approvals for new cards will be a soft pull unless negative information is added to your credit report. I have no idea where @Anonymous is getting their information about hard pulls being valid for 30 days.  That's definitely not the case with Amex.

It looks like you were logged in AND preapproved. It will most likely be a SP and remain a SP even after it posts to your credit reports. A HP for a preexisting member with a logged in preapproval is rare.

The 2 for 1 HP is typically for when an applicant is new to Amex.

Re: Amex Platinum Approved w/ Pre-Approval

Your application shouldn't be a hard pull since you had an existing card (Amex EDP) but will result in bumping the number of accounts opened in 24 months. HTH.

Chase's 5/24 Rule counts the number of new credit accounts you've opened in the preceding 24 months; it does not apply to the number of credit inquiries (pulls).

Re: Amex Platinum Approved w/ Pre-Approval

Looks like we both replied at 8:03.  My count was referring to potential new accounts if OP went for more Amex revolvers, not inquiries.

Apologies, if that was confusing.

Re: Amex Platinum Approved w/ Pre-Approval

Thanks for the great 411 on that.  Yes I was logged into my account and checked the qualified offers, hence was pre-approved so I considered the Charge a SP.  That being said, I probably don't need to push the 2 for 1 and risk a HP for a revolver necessarily, nor add a 3rd Amex and bumping my new account limit too high.  Either way, a SP from Amex is a beautiful thing, again appreciate the knowledge you all shared!

My comment referred to the OP's statement about 3/24 increasing to 4/24 hard pulls (see highlighted comment); no on anything you said.

Also, I'm skeptical about the claim that Amex uses a single hard pull for 30 days.  I've been an Amex member since 1995 and when I reactivated my membership last year I got two hard pulls after reapplying for two cards within days of each other.

I’m in agreement. I believe if the applications aren’t done on the same day, it’ll result in another HP.  I’ve never heard of or read that a HP for a new applicant lasts for 30 days. It’s typically same day or like you said, it’s another fresh pull.
