Are some companies that invite you to apply more likely to approve than cold apping? I don't have enough data points to say yay or nay. I got an invitation to apply for the Delta Gold today because I'm a SkyMiles Silver Medallion customer. I'll likely get declined but I was just curious.

Doubtful. Invites are handled by the marketing department, and are usually based off of old SPs. If anything has changed (for the worse) since the invite was generated, a preapproval essentially means nothing.
On the other hand, some people never get pre approved for anything and just cold app all the time and still get approved. YMMV.

OH SNAP! I was approved! 1000 SL with a 639 EX! I'm so incredibly excited! This was my last personal dream card. I could cry!!!! The second CSR was so nice. I had to go through verification and missed the call of the first. The second CSR said "so, I need to verify one more thing. that you have a smile on your face" and I started laughing and she said "Congratulations!"
Looking at the paperwork, it wasn't a preapproval but I'm stoked anyway. Now I can catch up to the hubby and get gold medallion status!
That's awesome. The Delta Gold was my first major approval in years one year ago. I just upgraded it to the Platinum last month. I fly Delta almost exclusively and they had been sending me mailers but I too was afraid to apply. It was an instant approval for 10k and I was never happier. Congrats and enjoy. My wife and I are flying out tomorrow with our zone 1 boarding and free checked bag!!! Lol!!!
