I've been slowly rebuilding what was a non-existent credit profile. I got a Capital One Platinum Mastercard 2 years ago ($500 with a $250 CLI after 6 months) and a Visa from my local credit union ($1500 CL to start). 1 year ago I app'd for a Chase Freedom which was initially denied but granted upon recon ($500 CL.)
Fast forward to this year. Some medical issues and missed work racked up the balances across all of my cards. It took a couple of months but I got things settled a bit, still carrying about $1000 across the 3 cards which will be taken care of in the next month or two. On a whim I requested a CLI for my credit union Visa, and they doubled my CL from $1500 to $3000. My confidence thus bolstered, I hit the luv button for the Cap1 card, $500 CLI takes the MC to $1250. I also took the opportunity to PC to a quicksilver one card. Onward to Chase Freedom cli! Called the number on the back of the card... CLI DENIED! Kind of what I expected, my file is still pretty thin. I get the denial letter, call the number on the back of the letter to simply clarify what appears to be 1 reason given a couple of times and the rep asks if I would like her to reconsider the CLI denial... of course I say yes. She asks the standard questions about income, reason for CLI request, and how much. Before I can get to requsting how much I would like she puts me on hold to review my file... she comes back and apologizes for not asking how much I wanted and asks if $2500 be acceptable for the new credit limit? I was not going to say no to a $2000 CLI at this point. The rep thanked me for my positive payment history and wished me a good day.
So in a matter of a couple of weeks I went from $2750 in credit to $6750, with love from both Capital One and Chase. I see a lot of people unhappy with Cap1 and Chase, I just wanted to share the good luck I had with them.
A big thank you to everyone posting in this forum. It has been the single largest source of help in understanding the how and why of improving and maintaining a good credit file. I spent a lot of time avoiding credit cards not realizing that no credit=bad credit.
