Capital One CLI

After reading the definitive guide to AmEx 61 day CLI a couple of days ago I decided to throw caution to the wind and ask. I have only had my BCE for about five months, however I have a perfect payment history and usually pay 2-3 times a month, letting my statement cut with a minimal balance to show low utilisation.

Anyway, I entered my (quite moderate) income into the AmEx tool and asked for 3x my current limit (was $2,500 so I asked for $7,500) fully expecting this to go to a pending review message. I figured they would eventually either deny it or counter with something lower, which I was fine with. I didn't really need the increase for anything, and have quite a moderate income so am not a big spender. To my surprise the CLI was instantly approved for the full amount, $7,500. To say I was pleasantly surprised was an understatement.

Bolstered by this, I figured I'd also ask for a limit on my Capital One Platinum, which had started out at $500 and a couple of months ago received an automatic increase to $750. I put in the request, and was told I would be contacted in a day or two. Well today I got the notification that Capital One denied it, due to already having received an increase. I just did a chat with C1 asking if this decision could be reconsidered, was told no, and that in general once you receive a CLI you cannot receive another for six months.

It just feels weird to me that AmEx, arguably one of the more difficult "mainstream" cards to obtain (I am still somewhat shocked I have one) are fine giving me $7,500, but I can't even break $1,000 from Capital One. Heck, even Discover gave me a $500 bump about a month ago (from $750 to $1,250) after I asked for it. Again, perfect payment histories on all of them.

Should I just forget about trying to increase the CL on my Capital One for now? I assume I'm out of options, if what they told me is true and I cannot obtain another CLI for six months. As it happens my Platinum anniversary is this coming April, and I'm certainly not going to pay an AF for a non-rewards CC so will be asking for a PC to a Quicksilver. If they refuse then I will be cancelling the account. AmEx seem to value me, as do Discover, but Capital One...not as much.

Hey dude, generally, most providers will only let you get a CLI every six months and if they do give you an auto CLI, it usually isn't a lot. You can try reaching Capital One's EO to see if you can get more help. I don't know if you spoke with a specific specialist via chat since they're usually just CSRs. Sorry about your lousy experience so far but it's great to know you have other options. I think you can hold out on a CLI for now and just shoot for the PC later on. Best of luck with that man.

Re: Capital One CLI

Thanks guys. Maybe I will try the EO, but honestly I don't really use the C1 that much. Just Netflix and maybe 1-2 other things a month, if that. It's mostly there for helping my AAoA for free; beyond that I don't really care about it a lot.

Honestly, I was considering going for the Chase Freedom and / or a Chase Sapphire Preferred, but I have no history with them other than a denial for the Amazon Chase card in August (the denial letter stated due to a short credit history - at the time neither my AmEx or Discover had appeared on my report). I had read that Chase likes to see higher limits on your other cards, and particularly at least one with $5,000 or more. That's mainly the reason I was going around looking to try and increase the CLs on my other cards. Hopefully the $7.5k on my AmEx will now make that easier.

I've read that Chase will auto-decline for any previous denial with them within the past six months though, and as I said they denied me in August for the Amazon card (kinda glad actually because I'll probably just app for the Sallie Mae card instead, which is better). Having options is a nice feeling, though.

Others will disagree with me, but I think your limited use of the CapOne probably has a significant impact on the kinds of CL they will give you. If you now push your spending on that $750 limit, all your groceries and gas for example, and pay that down, and do that "heavy usage", fast paydown, for several months, my theory is it will be favorable to you when the next CLI turns up.

The reason for this is, without showing a requirement for usage, or comparable cards (non-AMEX) with high limits, most banks may say "Why do you need a credit line for NetFlix?"

AMEX is different because they rely more on internal scoring models, and they look for payment patterns and usage directly by their customers. They also probably realize they get a positive boost in where they stand in your wallet by giving you a good CL.

Good luck!

Re: Capital One CLI

Capital One will not give a CLI on the website other than every 6 months, no matter what. Now, the EO can give you one whenever they want to, but most people just try the increase online first and if that isn't enough for them involve the EO.

Congrats on your Amex CLI, though!
