Capital One Loves Me!

Ok, I know love from Capital One isn't at the top of many peoples' lists; but I'm loyal them.  My credit took a hit in 2009 - 2 years of grad school + 2 years looking for a full-time job made it impossible to keep up with my accounts.  To get right to the gory details, 24 months ago the only credit of any kind I had was a $500 Capital One card from many years ago.

After getting on solid footing on the employment front, I settled all of my old accounts  around 18 months ago and I opened up a second line - a $200 secured card with Capital One.  Just for reference, BofA and DCU both turned me down for secured cards at that time (BofA probably becasue a recent charge-off put me on their black list, DCU probably because they are mean).  I kept using and PIF every month, and last July, with my scores in the mid-high 500s I took a chance applied for a Quicksilver One Card hoping Capital One would look at our relationship and not my scores; I was approved for $3000 (shocked).  Around the same time the old $500 line was increased to $1500 and the scured line was increased from $200 to $300.  I actually charge $3-5k per month on personal cards, so for the past 6 months I've been maxing & PIF the Quicksilver One Card and had no other inquiries on my reports.

Around Christmas time, for the first time in years, my credit monitoring showed one score of the three starting with a 6xx and I was feeling like I was on the right path.  I applied for an Amazon Store card (I buy pretty much everything I can on Amazon) and was approved for $600.  Then, the biggest news of all, I shared the story with all the excellent members here at myFICO of pushing my luck as far as I could and submitting an app for the Sallie Mae Barclaycard because I spend pretty much all my money on gas, groceries and Amazon, and amazingly enough after decline then recon with the nicest rep ever, I was approved for $1000 WMC.

I was ecstatic and really feeling my oats at this stage, so back to the Capital One part of the story.  I was pretty close to the 6 month mark on my Quicksilver One card and I definitely like the instant cash rewards for everyday type use.  I thought, what have I got to lose, so a couple of days ago I started an online chat and asked if they could consider me for the regular Quicksilver Visa Signature Card, with the backup option of asking them to waive the AF if that wasn't possible.  Well, it was no problem and they switched me over to the Quicksilver Visa Signature - no more than 10 minutes total chatting and totally pain free.

And now today (sorry, I know I'm long winded, but I'm just so excited to share with everyone here) - I had one last CC item to address in the near-term.  I was going to wait 6 months, but thought WTH.  I have a company issued credit card that I use for travel & entertainment - no personal liability, doesn't hit my credit reports.  I'm allowed to use a personal card and accumulate the points for myself, but alas, I didn't have any card with the limit I needed to put into the role (some months I have up to $5k in charges and 7 months ago my highest limit was $500).  After considering my options and my current credit profile, I found just one card that fit my criteria that I thought I could possibly be approved for - the Capital One Venture.  I went ahead and submitted online and...approved for $5k, and I'll easily be able to meet the $3k initial spend for the 40k bonus points.

That's all the apps that I could possibly submit for now.  I do have some longer term CC goals, such as getting my scores up, growing my relationship with Barclays and rebuilding relationships with BofA and Citi, but armed with the info from all the knowledgeable folks here at myFICO, I feel like I'm on my way.  Yes, it definitely seems like Capital One loves me more than most, and I feel very loyal to them for how they've handled my accounts over the years - actually there's one more thing I need to do with Cap1 right now - close that $300 secured line!
