First Amex Approval! Discover declined...again.

Ello guys, I'm new here on the forums. Little about me, 20 years old, full time student while working 2 jobs. It wasn't until recently (last july) that I decided to start building up my credit. I've had no credit history whatsoever since then. My first credit card was through my bank, Wells Fargo, and I was approved for a college card with $300 limit.

After about 4 or so months I applied for a discover IT student card and was declined Smiley Sad 2 months after that, I applied for a Cap 1 Platinum card and was approved for $300 as well. I used both cards on a daily basis, paying them in full each month. Up until a few days ago, I haven't app'd for anything, so I decided, what the heck, and applied for the Amex BCE. Instantly approved with a 2k credit limit! Then, I was like hmm, might as well try discover again. Well, go figure, I was declined again. Reasoning was because of "length of credit history was too short." Called and recon'd, no luck as well.

But anyways, I'm really excited with this BCE. Hoping to do the 3x cli within 61 days.

Also, does anyone know on how to go about converting my platinum card into a quicksilver...that $35 annual fee is no bueno.

Re: First Amex Approval! Discover declined...again.

Congrats on the AMEX! Get six months to a year on that and you should be good for Discover. It surprises me that you got AMEX and not Discover. Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing.

Re: First Amex Approval! Discover declined...again.

I called the "back door" number and I asked if they would reconsider my application. First thing the rep told me was that they do not have an official recon department, and that she would try to help me out the best she could. She explained to me the reason why it was declined, main reason was because of the length of credit history. I explained to her that all my payments were made on-time, and I paid the entire balance each month off both my cards. She also questioned my income, living situation etc. Tried my best to show her I was financially stable. School(tuition+room) fully paid for(scholarship), and ~50k a year combined salary with both jobs. She said "Sorry, but we wouldn't be able to process your request at this time." and she gave me a phone number to the CB(EQ) and told me to call them blah blah blah to get a copy of my credit report and suggested I talk to a banker at my financial instituion to get insight on how to build credit. Go figure because I'm actually a personal banker myself lol.

Re: First Amex Approval! Discover declined...again.

I would start with going onto your online cap 1 account and start a live chat with one of the reps. They will let you know if your plat card can be PC'd to the Quick Silver. If they say no..then I would get in contact with the executive office...Congrats btw

AMEX Delta SkyMiles Gold - $1K | AMEX Green - NPSL | Capital One Quick Silver - $3.5K | Capital One Platinum - $500 | Capital One Quick Silver One - $1K | Chase Freedom - $1K | Local Credit Union Visa - $250 | Barclay Rewards MC - $3.5K |

Congrats on the Amex.  I would take any Amex over Discover in a second, but sorry they denied you again.  Getting in with Amex at an early stage in your credit journey is huge.
