Re: First Approval - Apple Card!

Congrats on your Apple Card approval!

I know if it were me, I'd wait about 3 months to go for the CFU. Watch which bonus spend categories Chase offers to see if Groceries 5 points for 12 months comes up again.

The $1,000 limit on the Apple Card is useful, and you will probably be able to meet their expectations to "use a lot of the credit line" to get SP CLI before too long.

High Bal Jan 2009 $116k on $146k limits 80% Util.
Oct 2014 $46k on $127k 36% util EQ 722 TU 727 EX 727
April 2018 $18k on $344k 5% util EQ 806 TU 810 EX 812
Jan 2019 $7.6k on $360k EQ 832 TU 839 EX 831
March 2021 $33k on $312k EQ 796 TU 798 EX 801
May 2021 Paid all Installments and Mortgages, one new Mortgage EQ 761 TY 774 EX 777

Hey myFICO family!

Though I've been (religiously!) reading the forums for a few years now, I'm happy to post my own approval Smiley Happy I've started my personal credit history with the Apple Card, which was instantly approved for $1,000 at 18.99%!

The SL is plenty for my current usage, and I know it can grow with routine use, and I was pleasantly surprised with the APR not being higher, which I can only assume is thanks to the AU accounts which have generated some score. (Still going to PIF monthly Smiley Happy)

GS pulled TransUnion at 722 FICO (from the Credit Score Notice) with 0 inquiries, and an AoOA (the AU account) of 2 years. Still waiting on the AU accounts to update on Experian for its FICO, but I assume it should be somewhat similar, save for the few points difference due to the hard pull. Further DPs as follows : AAoA : 2 yrs, AoYA : 2 yrs, Util : 0 pct.

I've learned so, so much from all of you over the past few years, and couldn't be happier to learn so much more in the future! I don't really have much of a need for a thick file just yet, so I plan to garden (hello Garden Club!) until this card gets to a year old and the inquiry becomes un-scoreable. I might go for a Chase Freedom Unlimited or a Fidelity Rewards VS then, but your advice and thoughts are much appreciated! 🎉

Congrats! That's a really nice first card, and a good limit.

As a thin/young file, the hard pull might cost up to 20 points.

You need at least a year history of personal credit history to have a real chance with Chase, but if you plan to garden that long you should have a good shot. I've been told the Fidelity Rewards card is also hard to get on a thin/young file, plus it's a VISA Signature so they'll want to see other cards with $5000+ CLs in your file, so you might want to come back to that one later. If you're just looking for a 2% card, there are others that are friendlier.

I got CFF after 6 month using my first cc CO Plat secured, but now I rue it; did I apply too soon? Hence the meagre 500(Citi gave me 1000 and now CLI to 1500)?

Toy limits are another possibility, so that seems to fit the pattern. I applied for the Flex myself at the 6 month mark, but got rejected. Though it seemed to be a close thing -- I did a recon, and it took almost 2 months total for them to make up their mind. And I had a couple advantages most people with 6 months of history don't, including fairly high scores (thanks to an AU card), and a Chase private banker following up for me. There really does seem to be a strong consensus that it's best to have at least 1 year of personal credit history before applying for one of the standard Chase cards.

There's not a ton of 2% cash back cards that are relatively easy to get for thin files. PayPal/Synchrony's card seems to be one. WF seems to be approving applicants for Active Cash whom they wouldn't have approved in the past, but I'm not sure it should be considered "easy to get" - particularly since it has a minimum SL of $1,000. That's also the minimum SL for SoFi's 2% cash back card.

IMHO, the only thing that keeps the Apple Card from being an excellent 2% cash back card are the restrictions (Apple Pay for max rewards, can only apply for it if you have an iPhone, etc.). But it does seem to be an excellent card for building credit as a first or second unsecured card.

Update: As I'm looking for the PayPal/Synchrony Mastercard, it looks like they took the application offline and added a "waitlist" for an "upgraded" card.

Congratulations on your Apple Card approval! I also started my credit history with it and it has been an excellent card to build my credit history with. It has become my highest limit card which doesn't usually happen with your typical starter cards.

- Thank you! I've read so much of your journey, and the kind wishes are very very appreciated!

Re: First Approval - Apple Card!

@everest, in addition to the WF Active Cash and apparently defunct PayPal card, the other 2% cards that are friendly to thin/young files are the Synchrony Premiere and the FNBO Evergreen.
