Hello MyFico Community!
This is my first post since I discovered this site early this year. I’ve been lurking, reading and learning since that time. The wealth of information here is unbelievable. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and stories relating to your successes and failures as you continue to navigate this never ending maze called credit. Now on to mine...........
I just started rebuilding back in September 2017. Then, I had no concept of what I was doing. I had 2 AU accounts I was on from Citi for $3,000 and $4,000, with 2 years of history. Needlessly, I apped for a few cards and was turned down for all, except Commerce Bank. I was approved after a manual review for the Drury Club Visa, with a $1,000 SL (October 2017). Ending with 8 EX, 6 EQ, 6 TU inquiries.
Fast forward to this week. I got that itch. I tried to be a bit more strategic this time, at least in the beginning. My Fico scores are 675 EQ, 703 TU, 658 EX. Here’s how it went:
Macy’s Store Card - APPROVED $300 (EX)
Home Depot - APPROVED $2,000 (EQ)
Best Buy Visa - APPROVED $1,000 (EQ)
HSBC Cash Rewards MasterCard - APPROVED $1,500 (EQ).........This was an absolute shocker considering everything I’ve read about them not giving instant decisions.
I should have stopped there. I had to try TU since it’s the highest, but I had no takers. Synchrony has not touched me with a 30 ft pool. Very very strange. Here‘s the other side:
Old Navy - DECLINED (EX)
Walmart - DECLINED (TU)
Amazon - DECLINDED (TU)
Citi Costco - DECLINED (EQ)
Target - DECLINED (EQ)....... 7-10 day. Too many inquiries per rep.
Nordstrom - DECLINED (EX)
All of these were instant denials . Inquiries now stand at 11 EX, 13 EQ, 9 TU. I’ll be waiting til spring/summer to give it a another go. Regardsless, I’m over the moon about the cards I did get. Based on the research from the forum, most will grow quickly with proper use. Again, thank you guys for your transparency. I’m looking forward to sharing my journey with you all as you navigate through yours as well.
Congrats on your success!!

Thank you Scott! It’s so funny you’re the first to reply as I have followed your journey thus far especially. Congratulations to you as well for the tremendous success you have experienced up to this point. Your candor during your journey has been both refreshing and inspiring. I pray to have that same success in 2018. My goal is to be in 100k Club by the end of next year.
Boss,
U Can do it! U Can do it!! Keep the faith. Remember it's all in that magic FICO Score. Regardless of credit inquiries! Some banks will use the Excuse of to many inquires, but if your fico is high enough inquiries will be ignored.
The only one you can't get past is, to many recently opened accounts! That's my decline reason now. No mention of inquiries.
Congrats on your new CC.

How many months minimum do you think there needs to be before accounts are not considered recent?
If it's Chase it is 5 / 24 months. On average, 6 mths to year.

Well I know I’m out with Chase on the majors with these. WIll look for their co-branded cards when the time is right. Thank you for the reply Scott.
Boss,
