Helping out a friend trying to build credit

She recently moved to US 6 months ago.

Has a BOA secured at $300 one month old.

CK 713

What cards can she get approved for? I know it's limited, but she wanted cash rewards too. I told her to wait 6 months and they may graduate it but she needed it now for her side business.

She wanted a Cap1 to which I said no, because the limit would me 300-500 most likely and she needed one with 1k minimum.

So I recommended she cold app for Discover It, and Barclay Rewards (average credit) which are both pretty easy to obtain in comparison to other cards, and Citi Double Cash.

Will she qualify for any of these? Will these be 500-1000 starting limit? I'm iffy about the DC because I don't know if she can get approved but I suggested it because 2% cash back isnt a joke and she will be making many purchases

I think she is maxing her BOA out and paying it off, but a statement has yet to cut.

Advice? Recommendations? Thoughts? Should I let her app for Cap1? If so, which card?

Re: Helping out a friend trying to build credit

I think it would be hard without 6 mos of history. I would wait and then apply.
BK7 - 2/21
Cap1 QS - 2k (4/21) - Closed
Mission Lane - 4k (11/21) - Closed
Venmo - 900 (11/21) - Closed
SavorOne - 2700 (12/21)
VentureOne - 2000 (7/22) - Closed
CareCredit - 12000 (6/23)
Sam's Club - 2500 (7/23)
Venture - 5500 (8/24)
HELOC - 33000 (7/23)

Re: Helping out a friend trying to build credit

well she could try capital one quicksilver one, but she'd have to pay 39 annual fee if she gets approved, or student journey visa? that one's also got cash back 1,25% cash back with no annual fee. Not sure about barclay, they are good with recon, but with short credit history they might not approve her.

but as with other people, why not have her check pre-approvals from credit cards websites?

I got a Discover for 1000 with no credit history. I called and explained my situation (don't even have a SSN just ITIN). 2 days before I got a secured card with BOA then I did a secured chat to get the cash rewards version for the 3% gas, 2% groceries, 1% else with the secured card. After 6 months I got a CLI on Discover from 1000 to 2500. Just got an offer from Amex online and got a PRG. Only 7 months credit history.

My DW applied for Discover student without credit history and got only 500. She applied for BOA secured credit card 2 days before than Discover. She nows also have Freedom with 500 limit (many years with Chase). Only 8 months credit history.

I can't get a CK account, my wife did got one and got a score there, but she had to wait 6 months for Discover to show a FICO score on her account. One month later I got my FICO score too.

I said call Discover. Maybe get a card as AU with good paying history and low util. Then wait 6 months. Check pre app sites like Amex. For Chase wait 1 year with perfect payment. Don't let the card report more than 89 dls.

Re: Helping out a friend trying to build credit

thanks for replying. shes dating a good friend of mine semi seriously, so i ran the idea of letting her be an AU on his freedom card, at least until she can get her own card.

will the AU build her credit, get her in the door for chase, or qualify for other cards? my friends freedom is 6k, and csp 12k, which i basically heckled him in transferring over before he closes it next march lol

From what I read not with Chase. Some people say that it helps with Amex or Discover. It will help to creat a FICO score, but she needs 6 months of credir reporting for that.

Remember that it takes time for the cards to report. Credit building takes time, is hard to rush it.

Honestly you gave the best advice she will expect. You know Barclays is good to recon if denied and chances are good for a $1k CL. It maybe to soon for Discover for at least another 6 months. Any prime cards like Citi are out of the question right now in my opinion. Your doing a great job giving her advice.

Discover IT $17k / US Bank Ace (VSig) $13.5K / US Bank Cash+ (VSig) $13.5k
Sam's Mastercard $15k / Walmart Mastercard $10k / Blispay $7.5k PayPal Ex MC $10.8k
CareCredit 5k / Husq $5k / Cap1 QS $4.5k / Barclay Ring $5.35k / Citi DC (WMC) $12k

Re: Helping out a friend trying to build credit

If she's an AU on a chase it may help her internal chase score but not the Fico they use for qualifying for the card... IMHO

Re: Helping out a friend trying to build credit

well the idea is to get her a fico, and im hoping the chase freedom 6k line will show and some lender will try to match it hopefully or give at least 1k 2k. is this wishful dreaming
