I just moved to the US. How likely would I get approved for a CSP or Everyday Preferred?

Hey guys,

I just moved here a few months ago, got married! I'm learning more and more about the credit system here.

According to Capital One's free credit check (TransUnion?), my score is 720. I was added as an AU on my husband's Amex and BoA, and for some reason, only Amex is appearing on both Capital One's credit check and CreditKarma. I also only have a Capital One QuicksilverOne account that I got approved with a $300 CL 2 months ago.

I'd like to apply for either CSP or Everyday Preferred (or both!), but with my age of accounts only around 2-3 months, how good are my chances for a CSP or Everyday Preferred, especially since I got my QuicksilverOne 2 months ago?

Welcome to the board and the U.S.

Chase seems to like 1 year of credit history reporting, so for best chances I would hang on to that Cap1 card and at 6 months of age, contact their Executive Offices to request a limit increase to nothing less than $5k.  Then by 12 months that will be reporting for CSP.

Amex might actually be a bit easier.  Have you tried their online pre-qualifier?  I would probably wait for Cap1 to report for 6 months, then try for an Amex charge card (like PRG) - their underwriting isn't as tough as the revolver cards like EDP.  If you get approved for the charge card, immediately (same day) app for the EDP.  Some people are able to get both with 1 hard pull.  If they deny you for EDP (assuming the charge card is approved), it doesn't waste another hard pull to your credit.

You may want to look at a Barclaycard or Discover it card.  Discover especially favors clean, young credit profiles.

Ah I wasn't aware Amex has an online pre-qualifier, I guess I'll look into that! One question, can Membership Rewards points from PRG be combined with Membership Rewards points from EDP?

Thanks for the tips about applying for both PRG and EDP at the same time next time, along with Barclaycard and Discover!

Would you recommend that I open a Chase checking account to develop a relationship with them first? Or does that not matter? I currently have a Capital One checking account.

Quarantine, yes the MR points can be combined and as you know they have good redemption value and flexibility.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to open a Chase checking acct. If you go into a branch ask if they have any bonus offers. They won't strictly base a credit card app on that relationship, but anecdotal evidence suggests it's weighed into the decision - especially if you have to ask for reconsideration.

Ah I see, that's good to know!

I guess it wouldn't hurt to open a Chase checking account. I feel like I got my first unsecured credit with Capital One quite easily (despite the tiny CL of $300) because I already had a Cap1 checking account for 2 years; they didn't even suggest a secured card for me when I don't have any credit history at all.
