- Penfed PowerCash Rewards: Approved same day of application, $3500 limit, standard Visa (no Visa Signature). Was kind of disappointed in the SL and no Signature as they pulled Equifax, my strongest profile. Was not a member when I applied. Called to see if I could be reconsidered for a higher limit and got a firm and immediate no with encouragement to apply for a CLI in 6 months.
- Affinity Cash Rewards Visa Signature: Approved, $15,000 limit, Experian pull. I was shocked at this one. I’ve only been a member for a couple of months and they took the full 10 business days to approve, also requested POI before final approval. Really happy!
- NFCU GoRewards: Denied. Called to join once I finally received my grandfathers DD214. My membership was approved, then they offered a soft pull pre-qualification for all their credit cards on the phone. Jumped on it because I could spare a Transunion hard pull (and was actually expecting one - for some reason I thought membership itself would be a hard pull). The lady helping me said I was pre qualified for all of their cards. I went ahead with the app for the GoRewards and it went into processing, which is fairly standard for me as I have an extended fraud alert on my credit report due to an identity theft several years ago. I was surprised when I received an email the same day saying I was flat out denied, and when I checked the pre-qual on the app later I wasn’t qualified for anything but the secured card.

Rebuilder2021,
Congratulations on your approvals. Don't let the no from Penfed discourage you. That card will grow over time. Your decline from NFCU isn't surprising. This is not the first declined decision I have seen from them lately. I think Navy Federal is tightening their credit card underwriting. I would use the checking account and save some money in their savings account, and try again in 6 months to a year.

CONGRATS on your approvals.
As far as NFCU try waiting 6 months or more and try reapping. their prequal is notoriously wrong, dont go by what it says.
I joined navy and deposited 15 bucks in a savings and 15 bucks in a checking. then i waited 7 months and apped for the cash rewards and was approved for 3700, ymmv
At the time i got both of my navy cards, dec 2021 cr, and apr 2022 plat their prequal only offered me the nrewards. if you fail again in 7 months take the nrewards, it will usually graduate to a 2k cash rewards in 6 months or more, ymmv
EDIT - During the 7 months time before i apped for the cr i did add more money to the checking and wrote one check and used the debit card a few times.
PS DONT APP FOR THE FLAGSHIP
@Guyatthebeach thanks for the encouragement. I was pretty disappointed at the NFCU denial, good to know they seem to be tightening up their underwriting - TU is my only file that reports both a collection and a charge off, so bad luck there. They will both age off my report in the next 6 months but I'm not sure I'll reapply - a little worried about pre-qualifying again only to be denied.
@SUPERSQUID undecided as to whether I will try again, but I don't love that the prequalification is unreliable. Was really hoping for one of those monster SL they have been known to give out to less than perfect credit scores so I could ease off being so fanatical about getting most all my cards paid before the balance reports (I'm not really at the point in my credit journey where I'm fretting about AZEO). The $15k from Affinity more than takes care of that worry!
@Rebuilder2021 wow that 15k SL from affinity - makes me want to hop out the garden right now and apply for it LOL (i have a banking relationship with them ) .... but im gonna wait till next year since i have a bunch of new accounts.
Congrats though on your app spree - love to see success like this gives me hope
@mfinsmi1i really can't speak highly enough of Affinity! I'm blown away by the SL, wasn't even sure I would be approved never mind for that much.
@SUPERSQUID re: the unreliability of NFCU prequal, I just jumped on the app for fun and sure enough I'm once again showing as prequalified for all of their cards. Unreliable may be an understatement!
Congrats on your approvals
Congratulations on your approvals!
