I have shared some of my troubles in the past, and I think today everything is settled now. In 10/2012, I filed BK7 - the lowest point in my life. All was messed up. Huge piled of debts due to failed business, failed finances (over $250k of debts), failed everything. It was discharged in 01/13 and I felt like everything was lifted up. I was able to turn around slowly but surely. I have been making sure that I didn't fall into the same trap again.
As I have read many stories that AMEX will not let you back in if you haven't paid everything you owed them. I owed them close to $22k. It's been 10 years. After year 7, I have tried to apply but they wouldn't approve me. Strangely, though my wife also included them in her BK filing for her card, she was able to get back in this year. AMEX wouldn't even let me become an AU on her card.
Last month (June), I contacted the EO but they didn't get back to me. Then I emailed the CEO, and surprisingly he emailed me back and promised to do something. After emailing back and forth, then someone from EO called me and explained there was nothing that they could do or offer a settlement or payment plan since it's a BK7. I wasn't even qualified for payment plan since they said legally they could not ask for any payment whatsoever. They have checked with their risk management office as well as the legal dept. Then he communicated that there was 3 cards with individual discharged amounts. He was very clear that they are not looking for any payment. However, he said if I wanted to make it whole it's up to me, but he could not promise that AMEX would extend any credit whatsoever, though he said from time-to-time AMEX might, but there is no guarantee.
Then I started paying one card at a time and finally completed the full payment last week (07/05) for the full amount totalling close to $22k. Today, I saw a referral link to get 150k MR on the Platinum card from some website, and I just took the bite and see if AMEX would let me back in. I was expecting a denial as usual. Lo and Behold, I got an approval. I could NOT believe this. They actuall pulled 2 CR - EX and TU for my application. I think they wanted to check if the BK has dropped off. Luckily they only pulled EX and TU, since my BK only has dropped off from those credit bureaus. If they pulled EQ, my BK is still showing until at least Sept.
Anyway, just wanted to reaffirm the myth if you pay AMEX back every dime, the chances for them to bring you back in are very high.
