I also wasn't asked to provide proof. My father was a Vietnam veteran but is deceased. I said that when I called to open the account and the rep didn't ask for any information, not even his name, just immediately started me on membership.

That seems to be the norm. And without a name, I really doubt they have a way to cross-check anything. So I suspect they rely on periodic audits, where they ask for evidence if there's nothing on file. That's why it's a good idea to have a copy of your dad's DD 214 on hand, if they need proof.
