Out of curiousity does NFCU actually verify eligibility? My parents are vets and I have a copy of my mom's DD214 but NFCU hasn't asked for it yet... joined about a month ago.

They can, and if they do and you can't produce evidence, they can freeze all your accounts. There are reports of that happening, though for the most part they seem to rely on the honor system. I haven't heard a peep from them, for instance. Still, it's a good idea to keep that DD214 handy, and to get the paperwork in order first, before becoming a member.

This is why I waited until I received my Grandfathers proof of his military service in case they asked for proof. I didn't want my accounts frozen until his records arrived. I offered to submit the documents when I first opened my checking account, but they said that was okay that I didn't need to. They did say keep them handy in case you ever needed to provide proof. Glad I waited becuase it took 2 years for them to arrive.

I'm not positive if they check. i have read some posts they dont and some they do. in my case it was my service so it was easy and if they wish they can check. penfed asked more questions when i joined, even rank so i am pretty positive they check.

On a seperate note, 2 years to get military records. Sheesh that is slow, it must have to do with personnel shortage or the pandemic.
The last time i asked for a copy of my dd214 i got it in less than 90 days, and when i requested a veteran id card that also was about 90 days but the requests were pre pandemic and i know the vic came from the dept of veterans affairs.
Yeah it redicoulus how low it took, but I finally got it! I didn't get a DD214 form, I got NA Form 13038, Certification of Military Service. This is response that I received below in the screen shot.
I submitted a request fairly recently and they didn't take very long at all. Maybe 2 weeks at the most?
When I requested that document myself, I recieved a final pay notice. When I asked that company listed in your document to find it for me, they got me a NA Form 13038 just like you got. I wonder if I could have asked them to provide me that as well without going through the company. I don't know why the same response got two different documents back from the archives.

I submitted my reqeust on 4/21/20, so it did take 2 years and a month. I had to go back and confirm the date.

I wonder if the company dropped the ball and hadn't bothered attempting to find the documents until the pandemic shutdown was over or if putting together the proof itself was just obscenely more difficult than for my request.
Great to have now, all the same.

I called after a year of waiting, and they gave excuses for the delay. I just then forgot about it after so much time had passed, and my sister asked if I had ever gotten our Grandfathers military service records a month before I got it. I was contemplating calling to get a refund and all of sudden I got the email with the explanation and the certificate. I did receive this email 3 months after my initial submission but nothing else.
Age matters. I know a Vietnam vet who requested his DD214, long before the pandemic. It took a very long time. The reason it took so long was because they couldn't just bring it up on the computer, they had go through the paper archives. Given all the wars, different generations of technology and recordkeeping, locations scattered everywhere around the world, and so on that's a lot of information, even if it was conveniently centralized using a consistent system, which doesn't seem to be the case. And it would have been much worse when trying to fulfill @soxfaininfl's request, because there were no duplicates of any of those records destroyed in the big fire of 1973. Even the indexes were destroyed, so they not even sure what information was lost. In order to recreate even a simple verification of a service record requires inferring information from secondary sources, like unit records and hospital admissions. Newer generations whose paperwork is mostly computerized are much easier to handle.
The National Archives can be slow, but they seem to get the job done. Which I think is fairly impressive, given the hurdles they have to overcome.

Refund? DD214's for next of kin requested through the National Archives are supposed to be free.
