I know there aren't too many DPs on Nusenda lately, but my experience applying was a bit... muffed?... strenuous at the very least.
I did manage to get the CU account and the CC account with just one hard inquiry though.
(EDIT: For those who don't know, many report that applying for membership to the credit union causes a hard credit inquiry, then another one when you apply for the credit card.)
So I had emailed them a while back, asking about out of state membership, and was it possible to apply for the credit card without a membership.
They told me yes, but then I'd have to still join, but the CC approval would automatically get me approval for membership. (not really)
So, last week I went for the CC app.
No instant approval, but they called me next day and started with the 3rd degree asking why I applied from out of state, where did I hear about Nusenda, wanted explanation for my income, wanted pay stubs and W2.
I told them to kick rocks on the W2, and lowered my income (from 145k) to include only my current paychecks (no investments/assets/spouse income) putting me at 84k.
They said ok, but we'll see what they say. Apparently wasn't a problem since they called 2 days later with approval.
So I call them back since it was a voicemail on the last call.
I had been dealing with a specific nice young lady every time previously, but this time a different lady.
So then she gets all weird about my out of state status, making it sound like I was about to be denied.
Tried explaining I was already approved for the CC, but this seemed to confuse her even more.
She said they'd be in contact with me soon, and that was it. Ooookayyy...
So I emailed the previous lady I was communicating with earlier, and asked for clarification on some things.
She emailed me back assuring me all was well, that I just need to apply online for the CU membership, and make a donation to the NM Wilderness Foundation, which I did along with opening a mandatory savings account (not 'checking'?... weird...)
Did all that and she called back the next day, confirmed my CC approval for $5k limit.
(Probably could've been more, but I volunteered to reduce claimed income to avoid giving W2)
We went through things, got my membership number, explained registering online, etc...
DPs on accounts...
Nothing too egregious, just one new account almost 3 months ago.
They pulled EX of which I only had 1 HP on. Second newest account was 27 months old.
They did ask me about the new accounts, as they asked about everything. I just told them it's for the rewards the cards offer, and the same goes for the Nusenda card.
EDIT: I did forget to mention, all my credit scores were between 810-839.
I think EX was 825.
Another thing was, when I applied for the CC, I made sure to click the one with the 5% reward categories, but when she said I was approved, she said the "platinum card", so I had to clarify what card I wanted, and she said she'd let them know to switch it.
I'm glad I caught it before I received the wrong card.
Also, I like to keep my reports frozen, so once they ran my credit for the CC application (which BTW they pulled EX only), I immediately froze them again.
When applying for the CU membership a couple days later, it made no mention of a credit inquiry, and the lady I was dealing with didn't mention it either.
I was ready to tell them that 2 hard pulls is bs, but never needed to go there.
So ultimately it all worked out, but in 25+ years of using credit cards, I've never had to work so hard to get one approved. 3 or 4 phone calls, sending pay stubs, donating to charities, etc...
It's a bridge too far for some people, but in for penny in for a pound as they say.
Congrats
I've never heard of Nusenda, but a 5% card with a $5,000 SL sounds like it was worth the trouble. Hope it's nothing but smooth sailing with them from here on out.
Congratulations!

Congratulations!
Thank you Miss Liz!
Nusenda is a moderately sized Credit Union based out of New Mexico with about 35 locations locally.
They don't recruit members from out of the area, but they do allow out of area applicants.
However you can't just apply for their credit card, you must also become a member of the credit union, and there can be hoops to jump through to accomplish it.
As such, most don't go to the trouble of going to so much effort to get a credit card, but it's one I really wanted, so I decided to go for it.
That's Awesome Doppel. Congrats man! Sorry for all the extra work. Thanks for sharing your story. I love my nusenda card!
Enjoy!
