In the last six months I was able to get 2 AMEX (Green and Blue), a Capital One QS, BOA Visa Sig, DCU Platinum, and Discover - all unsecured - but something in my reports had NFCU spooked (probably the fact that I got six cards in six months). Denied twice. Reconned twice. Denied twice again.
Thought long and hard about waiting six months or so when my scores should be in the 700s (or sooner if the only baddies - tax liens - fall off on July 1st with the new reporting requirements) to app again. Decided to start the credit relationship clock with them now and hope they unsecure relatively quickly. Besides, I'll hopefully get a good CLI starting with a $5000 secured card rather than what seems to be the average SL of $1700 for unsecured.
With three good cards and three decent ones, I took on my first ever secured credit card. No regrets.
I need to pull the trigger as well. I know that at min. that $500 will be sitting in an account gaining interest but I guess I'm just being stubborn seeing all these approvals.
Congrats! If MF has taught me anything it's that NFCU is the way to go.
I'll admit I'm jealous that you're able to get in with them. I missed the boat with Navy Leauge SD
That is awsome, congrats. It will definitely help in the long run. I started out with a secured nRewards with $600. I have not had it for a year yet and I was just approved last month for a GoRewards with 7300 SL. My scores are not high at all around 590ish now, but somehow my internal NFCU score is high enough to get approved for the GoRewards with that limit. Secured definitely gets your foot in the door with them. Nowhere to go but up from here.
