Recent CLIs! Two Wows, One Meh

Been a while since I've been on the forums! With some serious August spend and really good FICOs that are probably going to drop when student loan payments come back, I figured it was time make some CLI requests and other adjustments to get me set for the next year.

  • US Bank Altitude Go: Increase from $8,000 to $13,000. Seven statements since my last CLI, this was the first time I didn't get a full 2x increase (prior CLIs were $1k to $2k, $2k to $4k, $4k to $8k). Still, I'm pretty happy with this level, and I think it's appropriate for my credit profile and monthly spend.
  • Capital One Quicksilver: Increase from $3,500 to $3,900. Gee, thanks, Cap 1, but I'll take it. This card has been clearly bucketed (started life as an Orchard Bank card, so it dates back to my not great credit days). No luck on the luv button for YEARS, but I had an unexpected $2,500 medical expense earlier in the summer that I put entirely on the card and paid off most of immediately (put the rest on a 0% Discover balance transfer). I suppose Capital One decided to throw me a $400 CLI in thanks.
  • Chase United Explorer: Increase from $14,600 to $23,600. This one made my jaw drop. This card started at $18,600, but when I was approved for the Gateway card last year, they dropped it down to $14,600 to give me a $4,000 limit on the new card. I was bummed at the time but understood; the Explorer hadn't seen much play since I didn't travel much during the pandemic. But, I had a mini splurge vacation in August for which I used the Explorer for exclusivly (multiple flights, hotel, and all the restaraunt expenses) and paid it off within a month. I thought what the hell, tried the luv button in the app, and was stunned to see the $9,000 CLI. Guess Chase decided that I must be back!

Other data points:

  • August FICO 8s ranged from 835 to 845 (will likely drop when student loans start reporting in the next couple days)
  • August total utilization was 1%
  • Recently refinanced one personal loan with another, and the first reported paid off in the credit reports, while the new one isn't reporting yet, so I requested the CLIs at just the right time.

Congrats! Why do you say the student loans in a few days will make scores drop?! This is worrying and I didn't know that.
