I have been on the fence with getting the Sam's Card again since January 2021. I had for a long time held a grudge against Synchrony who issues the card. Approximately 11 years ago they cancelled my Sam's credit card despite me using it every month and me always paying on time. I found out it was cancelled while in the checkout line with a buggy full of groceries, a large number of people behind me and my card being declined multiple times despite having a $0 balance. On top of the humiliation of getting out of line to go speak to customer service, me having to leave all my items behind and the time I wasted shopping, I was also frustrated with them as a company because at the time it was one of my few credit cards I was extremely responsible with, not paying late, not running the balance up. Needless to say in hindsight after getting into the credit game I see now I was a huge risk to them. Most of my other cards were maxed out back then, but with such a small credit limit and routine use I couldn't understand at the time why'd they do that to me. This has kept me from applying again for the card for many years despite all the shopping I do there.
Today I finally decided after doing the pre-approval application that if they can forgive me and my old bad credit card management behavior and give me a second chance I should do the same. I looked at how much I spent last year and so far this year and it just made sense. I was using a 2% card and they are offering me a 5% card for shopping in person at Sam's including curbside pickup orders, with a minimum of 3% if I order items online and have them shipped. It'll also be nice to have another 5% option for gas for those months I wanna use a different 5% category on my Citi Custom Cash card. My old Sam's credit card only had a $500 limit but today they pre-approved me for $8000. I gladly accepted the offer!
Another reason I had been hesitant to apply was over the last couple of years I didn't want to risk a Chase 5/24 slot for it. If I didn't recently get the Amex Platinum and Citi Custom Cash I would've been under 5/24 in August, but that ship has sailed. After looking at things, I will become 3/24 or 4/24 on the same day in November 2022 whether I applied for the Sam's card or not. With only 1 card from Chase on my radar, the Ink Cash, I decided to go ahead and apply for the Sam's Card. There's no guarantee Chase will approve me for the Ink and I've already held off over a year applying for the Sam's Card with me trying to get to 0/12 for the US Bank Cash Plus in December 2021. I was leaving a lot of money on the table settling for only 2%. They pulled Transunion for the application. Before today I had 0 inquires on there and for new accounts I was 2/6, 3/12 and 6/24 before applying.
