During a rough divorce in '08 I allowed 3 Amex cards to charge off. They were never paid. I had been cash basis since then. 8 months ago I began an attempt to rebuild with a USAA Preferred Cash Reards card SL $4500 (now 7500), a Fidelity Rewards Visa SL 9600, a Military Star card $5500 SL and a Discover It Cash $2000. My Starting scores were all around 660s at that time.
A month ago I attempted the Amex preapproval with scores in the 680/690 range and those new accounts. No cards found, letter said too many new accounts. And a derogatory from 120 day late in 2017 on my student loan (since PIF).
Fast forward to yesterday. Since I have started an LLC and I eventually want to have a business relationship with Amex because I travel alot as a nomadic freelancer so I decided it was time to try to get back in.
I applied for the Delta Skymiles Gold first and was approved SL $1000 HP TU 698. After setting up my profile I applied for the Everyday card and was approved with another $1000 SL another HP on EX 684. No other derogs except the old Student loan hit. Util 12% on two 0% int cards, 4% on the other 2.
From what I've read I understand these approvals are barely approvals and the low SL is to be expected. I will use these two regularly for smal purchases and PIF. In the coming year I will apply for a business product if all goes well.
There is hope post blacklist. And my "Member since" on my online profile says 2005. I know there's no backdating but I chuckled when I saw that.
congrats on the AMEX approvals
Thank you!
Btw for those with student loans

BTW, that 120 day late is a lesson for those who aren't actively using credit to still check their reports. My loan was in forbearance and no payment due but it was misreported by the servicer and they will not remove it. I only became aware of the reporting recently. Luckily it should fall off this year but...harsh lesson learned!
Congrats on the approval!

if you truly shouldn't be reported as late, consider filing a CFPB complaint or speaking with a lawyer about getting the reporting fixed.

very nice amex approvals!!
congrats!!

Congratulations on the getting off of the blacklist!
Congrats..
are you certain they didn't triple pull you? back in 2012 when I opened my first Amex, a BCE, with a SL 3500, the triple pulled me and my TU (they approved me based on) was 696.
First of all, those rebuild cards are GREAT, and anyone reading should TAKE NOTE.. when you start rebuilding in the mid 600s, you CAN get DECENT cards.. you don't have to go subprime!
Anyway, yeah.. you know the deal with amex, after the second statement, ask for 3xcli, and after the 9th statement ask for another 3xcli. Could easily see you at 9,000 on each in a short time. :-) Congrats again.. your profile sounds like mine in some ways, scores similar too. a good long aaoa even if youre in the mid 600s isn't the worst profile in the world.
The official excuse is that the change of servicer that happened at that time caused a delay in updating my forbearance status with the new servicer. This newer servicer says in short...I report what was sent over and if it's wrong take it up with the other guys. If it was more recent I would push it more. Even though it is seen as a terrible ding, it's an old one whose life and damage are coming to an end. Soon!
Thank you! I am looking forward the 3xCLI but even more to attempting a business relationship this year. I would like for Amex to be my first biz card. But time will tell.
