Thinking of adding one more card to my profile? **UPDATED**

Hello all,

So today I closed my Amex Hilton HHonors and EveryDay card. I know neither card had an annual fee but the DW and I haven't used either much since earning the sign up bonuses earlier this year. Also they had lower limits and I had been denied CLI on both accounts this year citing my overall exposure with them (Costco being at 19K). That all being said I closed them so that hopefully come November I can get an increase on my Costco TE.

Last week I apped for the Chase Marriott and was approved for 15k. Once my account shows up I plan on asking to move my CL from my Southwest card to the Marriott and close the SW.

I was thinking of apping for maybe one more card, maybe a Discover IT Chrome so that I can have a card on each network? What are your thoughts on Discover? Other cards? I don't know much about Discover, but they seem to be a somewhat conservative lender.

Re: Thinking of adding one card more to my profile?

The Discover iT is a much better card then the Chrome in my opinion. I don't see you having a problem getting it.

Discover IT $17k / US Bank Ace (VSig) $13.5K / US Bank Cash+ (VSig) $13.5k
Sam's Mastercard $15k / Walmart Mastercard $10k / Blispay $7.5k PayPal Ex MC $10.8k
CareCredit 5k / Husq $5k / Cap1 QS $4.5k / Barclay Ring $5.35k / Citi DC (WMC) $12k
Gardening Date 7/01/16 / MyFico 08: EQ 801 / TU 777 / EX 771 / 06/08/17

Re: Thinking of adding one card more to my profile?

Your stats showing appear to support an instant approval for the DiscoverIT card. As to the SL, that's always a toss up sometimes. One thing thats a given for the most part from my experience is that DISCOVER seems to favor nice starting limits at approval when your credit file isn't so thick. They had no problem mailing me a preapproval that went thru with no problem a year ago when i only had a Target CC and US Bank. I can't with any real certainty offer anymore then that but you should have no problem getting on with them IMO.

Best of luck in your decision to move ahead with them should you do so.

What are your goals for your card? Cash back or rewards? If cashback maybe the new double cash back citi card would be a good fit? I don't have a discover card, but they fill my mailbox each week with offers for the IT card. I'll pick it up maybe next spring. Its not high on my priority list, but since its a non-AF card it would be useful to have for AAoA purposes and rotating categories. I agree with your idea of having cards with different lenders.

Re: Thinking of adding one more card to my profile?

Cash back would be great, my TE is a decent Cash back card but something with rotating categories or even the double cash would be nice. I'm a little hesitant on the Double Cash seeing everyone's low SL with good scores/files. I don't know how I'd fair not yet having a relationship with Citi.

I don't know what type of line you would get. I think discover may give a higher initial line. I believe Citi CLI requests tend to be SP. I know that citi tends to give higher credit lines on the second card you get with them. I got the citi AA exec card and got an istant approval for 11k with them and that was my first citi card. Your report is stronger than mine was at the time.

Re: Thinking of adding one more card to my profile?

I don't see a big need for total network coverage (Visa, MC and Amex covers everything pretty well) so I wouldn't choose a Discover card on that basis.  Now if it makes sense, for things like ShopDiscover, then yes.

Issuer diversity seems more important, but again three different banks should be plenty.   (If you need more, something is wrong and having more won't help!)

Re: Thinking of adding one more card to my profile?

In a personal comparison (everyone's profile is taken differently) it's a sure expectation where concerns Citi that they DO offer (SP) CLI's after about 6 months. Other's may be different but i took a HP at only (3) months on my CDP CC for a nice (and early) CLI. 6 months past that, and just last week their Online luv button approved a (SP) CLI of $1400! I only had this CC for 11 months if that's of any indication how they operate. My DISCOVER card is stuck at the exact same limit as Citi just gave a (SP) for, and discover is over a year already and demand a HP for any CLI for my profile.

Re: Thinking of adding one more card to my profile?

I can agree with that and no I dont NEED more credit. However, utilitizing cards for their reward/cash back potential is the name of the game and that is a reason as to why im looking for another card amongst the other reasons. I do appreciate everyone's input and perspective.
