thought i'd share some data points after my recent spree this summer seemed to help some people.
short story:
got a relatively surprising Sapphire Preferred approval tonight.
long story:
saw 3 'green check' cards show up on both Chase web and mobile app (Slate, SP, SR). All 3 had a fixed APR.
really wanted to try the Reserve since it's 'out of my league' but held off. knew i should wait for better terms, let my profile age. Plus read feedback from board and there's no guarantee, I knew my recent accounts were too recent anyway.
those 3 offers were so frustrating for weeks...but then Chase changed their 'offers' section and indicated they were changing to "you are already approved" type offers. All of those offers were gone in new system.
today Sapphire Preferred showed up with the same type offer on my dashboard. the 'offers' section still said no cards matched. shrugged it off. Logged in again this evening and the offer came back. grrr... said screw it. filled out the short form and hit submit and I got stuck in some situation where the app was going nowhere. hit refresh thinking i'd lose it and that the offer was a mistake. got the app again, filled it out and was approved. barely made it but they actually gave it to me. I'm very surprised.
data
-I've been repairing but I still have derogatories from 2013 and 2014, those always put me in the top of the apr bracket if I even get approved.
-I got a handful of cards this summer, already got a 5/24 approval being over 5/24, shouldn't push my luck
-learned not to push my luck because last month went on a short, ill-advised app spree
(was in the garden but was on an American flight where I actually paid attention to the fact that the Barclay's AA card requires no big spend for SUB, just requires payment of AF and 1 purchase, the deal was too enticing, applied - got put on 30 day hold, denied the next day. Got kinda ticked off because at the end of August I tried NFCU Flagship Rewards and was denied because the line of credit they thought I qualified for was not high enough for their VS underwriting standards....so I figured I could still get some type of approval just on a lower profile card or just really chill out for a bit.....anyway, really foolishly ended up applying for Sapphire Preferred, US Bank Korean Air (forgot, it's the middle tier). Got denied all becuase of either too many recent inquiries or too many recently opened accounts. Chase specifically discussed 5/24 on the reconsideration line.)
-I got a card November 2016. I've noticed that many calculators/calendars won't consider that card off the 24 month list until December 1. So if that's the case I'm technically at 8/24 before SP.
-I had a fraud alert put on Experian back in June. it was 90 days. went to TU and EQ of course. in September TU and EQ alert fell off and Experian alert changed to 1 year. ....weird
-as indicated in previous posts - Fraud alert did make the banks contact me for some type of verification in order to get approved.
-tonight I was not contacted to verify application.
-haven't checked but got notifications from Experian and a TU FAKO site that I got an inquiry.
-had some weirdness in FICO world - EX score was 691 for 2 weeks straight (after I paid my cards down) and then on 3rd week, with absolutely 100% no new data on report the score went down to 683. Can't figure it out
-TU score was 697. I had two old student loan collections fall off this month and my score went down.
-3 old student loan collections were scheduled to fall off this month. so far only 2 have done so. all from same creditor, weird right?
is there a way to word my question best when I call to ask TU about that?
hope this helps. writing it I'm realizing I could probalby chop the amount of words down, gotta get used to acronyms.
Congrats on your approval .. what your SL !!

@xaximus @voltronm
thank you. Spending limit only $5,000. ...which is disappointing but understandable. They just gave me FU this year and I got a lot of cards this year. I was totally shocked they gave me the green check and the offer..... I waited til I got the offer for a 4th time, which was after the portal changed to the ‘your offers’ where they say, “we didn’t find any credit card offers for you today ....” the offer popped up on the landing page,
I made a note to myself to apply for the Reserve in a year or so when i had no recent accounts and could hope that my improved scores would yield me one of those high $20k+ limits but I just couldn’t resist an offer sent to me and by the looks of the SL I JUST made it into approval so it was probably wise not to seek a cold app for Reserve. I travel enough that the 3x would have been worth it but i have to be realistic.
However, can’t help wondering if the $2900 Discover balance that I just paid off truly held me back from a bigger SL. I was at about 9-10% overall utilization.
Extra data point - I never apply for a card with my middle name or initial. 50% vanity - don’t like my middle name, 50% strategic - my father and I have the same name and middle initial. There once was confusion over identity when I was trying to get credit in college. The banks that have approved me have not had an issue with me omitting my middle name but this card came with my middle initial printed.
so to one more time clarify - this came from the chase offer where they tell you all you have to do is fill out your income/employment because they have pre-filled all other fields with your existing customer info.
