I've had my Discover IT card for several years but have only had small CLIs since I opened it. My current SL is only $2,400. I've heard that sometimes Discover cards get "bucketed" based on the initial approval level and it can be difficult to break out and win significantly greater CLIs.
To get around this phenomenon, I'm thinking of applying for a second Discover card. According to the Discover website, I'm prequalified for both another IT card and the Chrome card. Since I'm an existing Discover cardholder, would these cards be approved based only on a SP? Or would Discover do a HP to approve another card?
Thanks!

Lately a HP although some people get away with SP's.. Have a 2nd Discover IT through there pre-qual site and was an EXP HP. Don't expect much of a higher CL on your second card especially if you have alot of credit already as that isn't how discover works. They rather give someone with average 650-680 scores decent CL's that have little available credit (initially) than give someone a high SL with alot of available credit and high scores as they simply don't think they will be used most likely and will lend money to others that will carry balances or use them considerably. Income/Scores don't seem to play a role on SL's with Discover just from my knowledge of them. Just my take on how discover works.
Got my 2nd card 2 months ago hoping it was a SP like some were reporting. It was a HP with EQ. First card was 1200 SL. 2nd card 18 months later was 6500. But as we say on here YMMV.
Great thread here on 2 Discover card DP's https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Card-Applications/Discover-2nd-second-card-app-thread/td-p/5...

Thanks! If I'm pre-approved via the Discover website for a second card, does this mean it will be approved on a SP? Or will they do a HP anyway?

95% HP. Only a few have been lucky enough to get a SP. If your preapproved. Pretty good chance of approval. Read the success stories in the link above. Very informative, Post your success there for others to see more DP's. GL

OP, as others have mentioned above, HP the majority of the time, but there's been the SP outliers as well. In the grand scheme of things, if approved, it's just one HP.
