Ok, I have the BCE. SL was $1,700 in Dec '16. $4,200 limit currently. I'm well past my 3X CLI period, and as soon as my SP hits my account this statement I'm going for $12,600. $0 balance, never late, 682 EX FICO, 39% util.
My util is going to fall to about 20% in roughly a week. So I'm interested in adding another AMEX (or two).
Went into the AMEX card section and I'm pre-approved for every card they have except for the cards that are variations on my design (anything that is either Blue or Everyday). Those ones I get the message: "expand your membership with us"...
Is there some rule you can't have two products that are similar?
Also, is there anything preventing me from apping for both a card that I'm pre-qualified for (in this case I'm thinking SPG) and then going for another consumer credit card? Are there still limits on applying for two non-charge cards in such a small time frame?
Thanks guys.
Great question -- I only have one Amex myself and just got my 61-day 3X CLI so I am replying to subscribe to the thread.
Since Amex only allows one CLI on any card every 6 months now (after that first one), I guess it makes sense to hold off on CLI request until you app and see what your SL is. You may want to CLI request the new card versus the old one!

Some sources claim there’s a 1/5 rule, i.e. 1 revolver card in a 5 day period. However I’ve seen some data points in the approvals forums lately that refute that.
The 2/90 rule is definitely still in effect though.
I currently have a BCE and EDP and I’m “pre-approved” for ED and BCP. I don’t think there are any rules around how many of those types of card you can have.
Agree with this. I don't believe the 1/5 rule is truly enforced based on my experience and reading the approvals as well. The 2/90 rule is something that's certainly enforced but hard to tell if that applies to charge cards as well but definitely for the revolvers at least. And AMEX from what I've read on the churning reddit have no issues with customers having "duplicates" of the same card family heck even the same card.
