Re: A bit shocked by Discover Credit Line!

Discover can be quite unpredictable at times... people who you would think would be an easy approval either get a small SL or declined altogether; other times people who have blemishes or a thin file can be given a generous credit line.

I can say, though, that since I've been on a new account 0% promo I've kept my balance at nearly 50% utilization from the beginning (due to a balance transfer), and both times I've asked for a CLI they've granted it with only a SP.  Granted, it was only $500 each time, but they didn't tell me "no".

FWIW, there are more than a couple of people on here who are disgruntled with being declined or refused a CLI, but there are also many more who are extremely pleased with them.

I don't pretend to know exactly what the answer is.  Smiley Sad

Re: A bit shocked by Discover Credit Line!

I've heard of people requesting a CLI right after receiving the card and being approved, not sure what truth there is to that.

Its a SP in most cases, they say they will ask you before proceeding if HP is needed.

i just requested a CLI from them the other day and was an instant approval for 3k.

Agreed.

There is no longer any pattern with Discover.

Their CLI's are all over the place.

The only constant I have seen is that a TU FICO8 score of 740 or better earns a 4-figure, as opposed to 3-figure, CLI when a CLI is granted.

I will do this for sure! The worst thing they can say is "no".

Sorry to hear but I'm not surprised, knowing what I know now about Discover. Though many on here sing Discover's praises, I just APP'd them on Thursday with a 748 EXP and a 722 EQ and got a big fat DECLINED. Pulled two reports at that! I received a "we need some more info so please call us" screen and thought perhaps it was just verification. Called and talked to a rep and they said too many new accounts and limited credit history. Yes, I have many new accounts in the last 5 months however I have other accounts that have been on my reports for 4 years now. Not impressed at all. They offered me a "joint account" and I said no thank you. She said please reapply after your new accounts age and we can reevaluate your credit for a card. I told her that with my scores and income (over 6 figures) that I shouldn't need a joint account and also, I wouldn't be inclined to apply with them again but thank you anyway!

It is well known that Discover seems to prefer thinner files, or at least not many new cards on approvals.  There are tons of cases like yours where someone has great credit and a lot of cards and cannot get approved.  They want to actually be used and approve those that will actually use the card more it seems.

If you want Discover, get them early or at least garden for 6 months or more before applying it seems.  You then have a much better chance.  Me personally, I love Discover.

Re: A bit shocked by Discover Credit Line!

Mark me as another one that was lucky enough to get in with discover but got a patethic 1k CL..  When my medium is around 15k CL and high is 34..5k..  A bit disappointing, but hopefully it will grow to 10k within a year.  disocver makes 0 sense give someone out of BK a 4k CL or someone with 60 Utilzation 6-8k CL which Meh scores.  They absolutely have no rhyme or reason.. Even if I don't get my CL up as quick as possibly I will use them for the 10% back fro first year, just hopnig they will grow as it is a very sad credit line they gave me.  Guess my 90 days will be up in about 45-50 more days and see what that yeilds although guessing a 500 CLI

Re: A bit shocked by Discover Credit Line!

My Discover CL started at $10k and then it went down to $7.5k > $5.5k > $20k (current CL).  The CLI is right on the 3 years mark with them and I started using the card more (current FICO on Discover site is 737).

Oh and I haven't used their luv button in over a year. Smiley Tongue
