AM EX upgrades

If you upgrade from Gold to Gold Rewards, can you keep the same account number?  Is there a hard pull on your CR?

What about the same (from Gold to Platinum?)  Must you change account numbers?  Hard credit pull?

Finally, what do ppl do with their first Amex when they upgrade to another and don't want to pay different fees on different accounts?  Just close the earlier one out?

If you have had your card for more than a year and you are doing an "upgrade" it will not be a credit pull and it will be same account number.

If you apply for a second charge card, it will be a credit pull and would be different account number, then it would be up to you rather you kept both and paid for both or closed on out.  remember if getting a new account, wait till Jan, so it will backdate furthest

Re: AM EX upgrades

Speaking of upgrades.  I got some clarification from a CSR today.  So I got an upgrade thing when I saw offers for Gold/Platinum a week or so ago and I wasn't sure if I was able to upgrade. The CSR told me you can upgrade but it'd be a hard pull even if its offered on the site. She said you cannot do a product change/upgrade on Zync for 13 months due to the credit reform act. After that she said you can product change to a different charge card should you do so. She said those triggered likely due to your AMEX SPG/Sky Pref Rewards triggering that but she told me to ignore it unless I want a hard pull...

I guess what I'm trying to say is if you have a Zync, you CAN product change from 13 months from date of open which for me would be Oct 2011. You can product change many cards as long as they have been open for at least 13 months but it would be ANOTHER 13 months to product change again if you decided to go from Zync-->Platinum-->Premiere Rewards.  So you're stuck with it unless you close the card she said.

Interesting stuff!

This is not true from my experience, once you have cleared the 13 months you can pc freely... I went from cashback - delta platinum - blue 2 months later and they even credited back the annual fee on delta.  Charge I went gold- green - zync... however that may have been 12 months apart.

but I have pc every account in the last 6 months with no issues or credit pulls etc. (thats 6 pc)

Re: AM EX upgrades

That's odd because the woman told me when I PC from AMEX SPG to AMEX Blue Sky Pref she said I couldn't PC for 13 months again. I've had that card since January 2008 and just PC last week. to AMEX BSP...

Ugh...Why is everything so conflicting with AMEX's CSRs?

Re: AM EX upgrades

I want to product change from the Costco Amex to the SPG card.   But I want to wait till next month when I apply for a new Amex card  in the hope that they only do a hard pull once.

I dont' think you can PC Costco or Lowes... I know for sure you can't PC into them, because I want the costco really bad.  also no pull for pc's

Re: AM EX upgrades

Yeah I haven't heard of people changing in or out of the costco Amex card before. I guess the alternative would be for me to just keep it and apply for the SPG and one more. I just don't know if Amex will trust me with three of their cards. lol

I'm also a bit hesitant because part of me wants to wait for the SPG 30k promo to come back.

Re: AM EX upgrades

Yeah but if you PC to the 30k points promo you won't get them since it's a PC per the rep.  All the "bonus points" after certain spending you won't get from what the rep told me. You'll only get the core benefits of the card...none of the "new card member" bonus stuff unless you DIRECTLY apply for it.
