It depends what you mean by "a lot".   If you spend enough, the Old Blue Cash is better.   And if you really really value MR, PRG can be better.

Naw.  Just put your first 6K on the preferred then swap to another card that gives 3% (there are more than 1 that do this for grocery.

It really depends....   On $6K spend, BCP gives $360- $95 AF (for those with the new fee).   If you "prime" the OBC correctly, you get $300 back on that $6K spend (5%)  And then goes up to $50K spend.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by "prime".  Can you explain?  And by "OBC" are you referring to the every day card or something else?

Edit: Just found it, old blue cash.  So I take it this card is no longer avail.  Interesting card.

Actually it is still available.  You have to open this link in incognito mode to get to it. Amex hides it well

Thanks.  From what I can gather, this card would only really make sense if you spend a ton on groceries and gas in a year, since the first 6500 is only 1% back.  I'll do the math later, but I don't think I'm anywhere near the threshold needed.

Just to "prime" the card first, it seems  you have to do so via gas or grocery (other purchases only give 0.5%).  Cards give 4% already on gas, so that would be a 3% loss.  Our household spends ~ $600 on avg a month on groceries so it wouldnt make sense to "prime" the card that way.

Yeah, this card wouldn't make any sense for me.

I'm interested in seeing a scenario where it would make good sense versus the new card in combination with something like the citi costco that gives 4% on gas.

@Anonymous is very familiar with the card so he's the one that can give you some ideas.

@longtimelurker -- can you provide the math of how the old card makes sense versus the new one?  Just curious is all, because I can't see how it does.

Re: AMEX BCP and BCE Dining Category?

I was thinking that the BCE has a bonus on Department Stores but I saw that my Nordstrom purchase has no bonus for it.  I would prefer the Department store bonus.  You might not shop at department stores but Nordstrom, seems to be very packed every time I go there and there and there are plenty of cards that give three percent on dining.  For example my NFCU Go Rewards.

Posting details would upset some people here, so I won't

Not sure why that would be the case, it should just be simple math.   PM me if you're really concerned.
