I checked the terms on the BCP as a new application and there’s no mention of department stores. I believe that’s what is being referred to.
Ah Ok. Thank you

My guess is it will be a 3 percent category to replace the fact that they removed department stores. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were dining, but we will see. Either way one still needs to consider the AF and alternatives available. When you say they removed dept store, do you mean the they took away the 3% for all dept stores or they just took some off the eligibility list?
For new applicants they took 3% cash back for department stores away completely.

Thx for the link. I really had no idea! Since I use the the Gold card for supermarket spend and don't drive, the dept store benefit was the only reason I was even considering not downgrading this card...and quite frankly that's only because I have a reduced AF ($45).

I just closed my own BCP a few days ago, and I still had department stores at 3% so you likely still do as well. ![]()
As far as I know there's been no mention of removing it for existing cardholders (those who had the card before Nov 2018), so for now you're probably OK. (Not to mention with a AF of $45 I would consider hanging on to it anyway.)

I just checked and it's still listed as a benefit for my account, so I will mostly likely hang on to the card.

A category that eludes AMEX is entertainment--movie tickets, bowling, pool halls, concerts, sporting events, axe throwing, paintball, go karts, arcades, etc.
Would be killer as a 3x category on the Blue cash & ED or green.
There is a way around this...two ways actually.
1. Use Groupon. Ebates is offering 6% back on purchases made on Groupon. Moreover, Ebates is partnered with American Express. When you link your Amex card to your Ebates account, you can receive MR points instead of cash back. You can find pretty much anything on Groupon. I recently spent $180 on Groupon to have my brake pads replaced, and that netted me 1080 MR points. If I had gone to the garage instead and paid with my card there, I would have only gotten 180 MR points.
2. Go to a grocery store and purchase a gift cards. Your purchase will be coded as grocery and you will get bonus points. Obviously this is much less flexible, but it can be an option.

^^^ THIS, would have me blowing the dust off my BCE... Especially if they threw amusement parks in. There really isn't a great card for Disneyland, Six Flags, etc. and the amount of card swipes happening in these parks should be quite provocative to a CC issuer.

Yeah the Savor, BBVA ClearPoints, and Marvel clean up on the entertainment categories, I don’t know why Amex hasn’t embraced it.

They ED version that earns MR is suppose to get a make-over as well
It needs one--BADLY. ED is the lowest APR of all my AMEX revolvers (15.24%)--it would be nice if I could start using it again. They should make it 2% on everything just like Blue Biz Plus.
If you are only getting 1 CPP with MR, you should consider running some numbers to see if cash back makes more sense for you. 1CPP is a terrible value with MR. So many ways to get considerably above that.
