AMEX CLI question

My dad has had an Amex card for the 15 years +, never been late with scores in the 730s. The credit line is at 2k and he owes about 800. I dont have any experience with american express, but have seen folks on the board talk about 3X CLI. Do you think its worth trying for a CLI? Has anyone been successful with such a high utilization? Also how is American Express with counter offers? I was thinking of him requesting 20k.

If he qualifies, they will instantly counter. Tell him to shoot for the full 3x.

Of course it's worth it. It's a soft pull, and the worst that can happen is they say no.

Congrats.  He was able to get more than 3X?  Did he do it via the CLI link on the account page?

Yes, it was through the CLI link on the account page. He asked for 12k and they countered with 9.9K. He has had the card since 96..I am thinking of becoming an AU on the account. How will that help me? It will be my highest limit.

Thanks for the info.  That's good to know that they're giving out more than 3X.

It will help you with your overall utilization. So if you carry some balances on your other cards your score won't get hit by too high of a utilization percentage.
