AMEX Card Convert, Down Grading?

I just received my first statement for my AMEX Delta and it had an AF of $135.  I really thought when I applied that they waived the AF for the first year.  I have read a lot on here that also stated the fee was waived the first year.  So I called AMEX and was told that no it is not waived, but I could "down grade" my card to one of the Blues with no AF.  The CSR kept saying things like, "So just to be clear you want to down grade your Delta to the blue." and "Ok I have just down graded you."  I though that Delta was sub-prime and Blue was prime, why would that be considered down grading?

I am guessing you apped for the Platinum Sky Miles.

The disclosure matches that $135 fee.

I guess I am confused, why is this down grading?

Unless you never travel- The Plat SM is very feature rich - Double miles on alot of purchases

If you only have a Blue- you are in the Express Rewards program

You would get miles faster and an extra ticket every year with the Plat-
