Went to check spending power on my Platinum to see if I could get my renovation charges all on the card (plan on using it for SUB for CS Plat at some point) and it didnt just tell me I was approved for the amount but told me the max amount I was approved for, which was interesting givne it is a charge card.
Nice CLI

This could be the information so many Amex charge cardholders have been asking for for years!!
I tested it on one of my business charge cards but it did not work and in fact, my first check was approved and I doubled it and it was declined so I came down half and it came back partially approved for an amount less than half of my first amount I checked that said it was approved... so that didn't work at all! lol

They must get nervous when cardholders hit that button. I don't think I'll ever click it.
Also, I'm not sure anyone can count on that approved number as a firm CL-like max. I bet it moves based on card use, economic times, and other card util.
If you ask for $18,000, it very well may say you are approved for $36,000. Amex added that feature a few years back and that seemed to be the case.
Don't play with the button repeatedly. When you check your spending ability, American Express is anticipating you making a charge of that amount. Use it responsibly.

I think that it's more likely that is meant for a single charge and they tell you the higher amount so that you have some flexibility with your single purchase.
But no, I would never touch that button.

Yes it does. When I had my Gold Card the spending limit and pay over time were both $35,000 - the highest ever balance on the card was around $5000. When I got my Platinum it sometimes wouldn't even show $1,000 (when I had other charges on the account). My high balance has been just over $2,000 and the spending limit on the card (and POT) seem to have stabilized at $10,000.
Sometimes when I do the check it does the "in fact you're approved for" and sometimes it doesn't.
Here's an odd one - I just tried to generate one as an example, puttting in 7568 as the amount I wanted to spend. I was told to call the number on my card. I then tried $5000 and got
So evidently I can spend up to $10,000 as long as it's not exactly $7568
