Re: AMEX GOLD Alternatives?

What aspect or aspects are important to you? Restaurants? Groceries? You also mentioned Platinum, which is a whole different set of benefits.

I am planning to close my Gold Card soon, in favor of BCP (groceries) and Altitude Go (restaurants). But that might not work for everybody, especially somebody trying to get away from Amex.

If you like the Gold because of restaurants and groceries you might want to check out Citi Premier.

  • $95 AF
  • SUB is 60,000 TYPs after $4,000 spend
  • 3x for restaurants and supermarkets
  • 3x for gas, airfare and hotels
  • 1 x on all other purchases
  • $100 hotel credit
  • No FTF

Now I am not familiar with Citi TYP transfer partners but I believe you can redeem points at 1cpp as statement credits, which is quite reasonable.

Re: AMEX GOLD Alternatives?

OP, are you looking to earn points for travel playing the transfer game or going cashback? That will change what suggestions the forum will give you

If the Gold could be easily replaced, it wouldn't be as popular as it is. We do need more details to make suggestions though.

Re: AMEX GOLD Alternatives?

Something with similar categories is the NFCU More card. It only earns 3% back on restaurants and groceries, but also includes transit.

Amex gold is 4x points on groceries and restaurants, and these points can be redeemed for travel at 1 cent per point, making the return effectively 4%. The annual fee obviously offsets this. By transferring to their partners, one dollar of spend can increase from a 4% return. It wasn't uncommon for me to redeem a point at 2 cents, creating an effective return of 8% on the dollar.

I've been tempted to dump the Amex Gold card for the NFCU More card...  since it takes a lot of work for the former to pay out at 8%.

There is a thread here that probably has a lot to do with it.

Re: AMEX GOLD Alternatives?

Without knowing what exactly you're looking to do for rewards (cash or points?) I can suggest Cap One's Savor.

$95AF

4X cash back on dining and entertainment

3X on grocery

No FTF

If you're looking for a points system, the only real contenders are Chase with the UR system and Citi TY's. They both have their strong points with card product offerings, but certain point systems are stronger depending on what airlines and/or hotels you favor.

The Capital One SavorOne, which provides 3% cash back for both dining and groceries (and also entertainment and streaming) but no annual fee (and also no FTF) would also be a viable alternative to the Amex Gold if travel-focused rewards points aren't important to the OP.

Playing the credit card rewards game since early May 2020.

Current credit cards:
American Express: Hilton Honors
Bank of America: Customized Cash Rewards Visa
Capital One: SavorOne MC
Chase: Amazon Visa, Freedom Unlimited Visa, Freedom Flex MC
Citi: Sears/ThankYou Rewards MC, My Best Buy Visa, Custom Cash MC
Comenity: AAA Travel Advantage Visa
Discover: Cash It
Elan: S&T Bank Max Cash Preferred Visa
FNBO: Amtrak Guest Rewards MC
PSECU: Founder's Visa
U.S. Bank: Cash+ Visa
Wells Fargo: Autograph Visa
Store cards: Kohl's

Next target credit cards: Wells Fargo Bilt Mastercard (probably), Truist Enjoy Travel Visa (maybe)
